Mangaluru: 2.5 kg of gold seized at airport, two SpiceJet staff arrested

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jul 15: The officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday July 16 arrested two persons for trying to smuggle gold at Mangaluru international airport.

Sources said that Mohammed Hanif of Mangaluru and Uddappa of Kodagu have been arrested in this connection.

Both of them are said to be SpiceJet staff.

The two were travelling by SpiceJet's Dubai-Mumbai-Mangaluru flight, it is learnt.

Sources said that the officials seized 2.5 kg of gold and also, reportedly, 2 kg of saffron from the accused.

A press release from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mangaluru stated that the DRI officials intercepted the aircraft concerned on its arrival to Mangalore International Airport and after thorough examination, were able to retrieve and seize 22 pieces of gold biscuits, totally weighing 2566.050 grams. The total value of the gold under seizure is placed at Rs 75,26,225.

In this connection two employees of Spicejet working at Mangalore International Airport who were a part of the conspiracy and who were helping the smugglers in retrieving the gold biscuits from the aircraft upon its landing at Mangaluru have been arrested.

"As the conspiracy was unraveled by the officers of DRI, it was found that the gold biscuits sourced from Dubai were concealed in the said Spicejet aircraft during its International run from Dubai to Mumbai by a carrier hired for the job. Thereafter once the aircraft was deployed on its assignment in domestic sector; it operated between Mumbai and Mangalore. It was here that the arrested Spicejet employees who were passing on advance information to the smugglers regarding the itinerary of the aircraft, were found indulged in retrieving the concealed gold biscuits from the aircraft and delivering them outside later on, thus, misusing their position to smuggle gold out from the airport by avoiding customs check all along. They confessed their guilt on interrogation and admitted that they were doing it for the lure of hefty money offered by the smugglers and have already done it on six occasions earlier," the press release stated.

Further investigations are on.

Modus operandi appears to be like this: This particular aircraft starts its international journey from Dubai to Mumbai where customs clearance is done, but the smugglers, in connivance with the spicejet staff, conceal the metal in the aircraft itself, which then proceeds for its domestic journey to Mangalore where no Customs clearance is required and the staff retrieve the gold from the aircraft and handover the same to the smugglers at Mangalore. This might have been going on for a long time and when some dispute arises amongst the smugglers, they inform the authorities which enable them to catch the culprits.

Misusing their Position .Now they have lost Job and side business pay also lot of Money ,or go into jail?when they have admitted of doing six times ,must have done 6into six?shameful act.Or they joined this Job only for this?Saffron is also so precious as Gold.Must have earned good as side Business.Customs should have asked the names of their "Business Partners" and could nail them.long time jail is better for them.
