'Easier visa regime to promote tourism'

New Delhi, Jul 16 (PTI): The Commerce Ministry has pitched for an easier visa regime to promote tourism and boost service sector exports. “We have been recommending (easy visa regime) to improve tourism and certain service sectors, including medical tourism.

“We from the ministry wanted e-visas and visa on arrival to be provided, so that it becomes less cumbersome and helps in promoting services sector and tourism,” Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Citing an example, she said if a tourist is going to Bodh Gaya (Bihar) and then to Nepal and wants to come back to visit Sanchi (Madhya Pradesh), a single entry visa will not be helpful. “It should be a multiple entry visa otherwise the tourist will have to once again obtain a visa. So these kind of anomalies, we wanted to be sorted out,” she said.

The main idea of these recommendations is to promote tourism and other services.

Internal security
“We have sent it off to the Home Ministry because they have to consider it from internal security point of view and so on,” Sitharaman said.

The proposal is a part of the ministry’s initiatives to boost India’s services trade. According to an industry expert, India is missing out on a huge opportunity worth about $80 billion annually in terms of attracting overseas tourists and foreign exchange.

Small countries like Thailand attract millions of people whereas tourists flow in India is far less. The move assumes significance as the services sector constitutes about 60% of India’s GDP, but its share in global exports of services remains at a lowly 3.15%.

The area has emerged as a prominent sector in India in terms of its contribution to national and state income, trade and FDI inflows.

The sector contributes around 28% to job creation. Its contribution to total trade is 25%, around 35% to exports and 20% to imports.

One good thing undertaken by the BJP Government is the Visa on Arrival Programme but one month visa was not at all practical. Now, the Government is trying to increase that to 2 months. If that is fully changed to 3 months multiple entry visa, it can increase a lot of tourism.

On the other hand, if India still thinks that tourism is the exclusive privilege of the rich, that is a misconception. Ordinary people are now travelling around the world, and India has a great potential to tap the opportunity since India is a continent with different culture-religion-language-food etc. The safety of the tourists must be of greater concern else it will be sending bad message around the world.

A few years back, some tourists attended a Church service in Alleppy, Kerala. Some street goons complained to the police that they are undertaking forced conversion and the situation got very messy and they were forced to leave the country. All these are coming in the new media which will throw mud on India's name as a tourist country.

It is also high time for the Govt. of India to push forward so that Indians will be obtain visas on arrival at all countries of the world.

As of now, India provides visas on arrival to nationals of so many countries, while Indians do not receive the same treatment in the same countries.
