Udupi, Jul 19: 'Aatid Onji Dina', the feast of mouth-watering and rich traditional Tulu Nadu food was celebrated at Amanni Ramanna Shetty hall here on Tuesday, July 19. The food items were served on banana leaf as per tradition.
The fun-filled day, organized to commemorate the month of Aati, witnessed hundreds of women volunteers of Mahila Sangha participating enthusiastically.
Jayakar Shetty Indrali, president, Tulu Koota Udupi inaugurated the programme, while Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje, president, City Municipal Council, Udupi and Nirupama Prasad Shetty, district Lion's convener were present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Jayakar Shetty said, "This day is organized for youth to understand the importance Aati month. This festival reminds us of olden days and the struggles of our forefathers. During monsoon, they used to face many difficulties and life was not easy. In order to cure the seasonal diseases, they used medicinal plants.
"In olden days, people used to play indoor games with friends while feasting on rural dishes. But the young generation has no such atmosphere at home. So programmes such as this go a long way in preserving our own culture.
"The purpose of organizing this programme was to educate youngsters about the culture of Tulu Nadu and preserve its rich heritage," he added.
Suprabha and volunteers catered variety of rural monsoon food. The food items especially made by the members of Mahila Mandals were mouth-watering.
Nearly 40 Mahila Mandali members participated in the event.
The stage function was followed by a delicious rich Tulu Nadu lunch served on banana leaves. Dishes such as boiled rice, 'arepda pundi', 'kudutha chutney', 'pathrode', 'chilimbi adde', 'pelakayida gatti', 'majoltha iretha gatti', 'thimare chutney', 'niruppada kukkuda chutney', 'kese chutney', 'pelakayida mulka', 'pundi gasi', 'uppad pachir palla', 'tevu, padpe, tauthe (cucumber), 'tojank palya', 'tojank vade', 'saar nadye', 'uppad', 'ale', 'pejakai', 'padengi gasi', 'tarayida chutney', 'thevu thetla', 'paradi payasa', 'kanasi gasi', 'pelakai pacchir' and more were served to the gathering.
Before the lunch break, colourful Tulu folk dance performances were staged by the members of all age group.
The programme was jointly organized by taluk Mahila Mandali Okkoota, Udupi, Kannada and Sanskrit department, Lions and Lioness club, Malpe and other Bants Sangha.
