As the employees struck work since last midnight, office- goers waiting at bus stops was a common sight across the city, while thousands who had come down to Bengaluru from different parts of the state were seen stranded at Kempegowda bus stand, the city's main bus terminal.

Commuters had started facing trouble since yesterday evening with drivers and conductors not turning up for work.

Similar reports have emerged from different parts of the state. Authorities in several districts have declared a holiday in schools and colleges.

More than one lakh employees of state transport corporations have gone on strike with about 41 demands, including a 35 per cent wage hike, while state government has offered 10 per cent increase.

Several rounds of reconciliatory meetings held between the management of state transport corporations and the unions, even at the level of Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, had failed with both sides sticking to their stand.

"We are still open for discussion with the unions. They have to come for discussion with an open mind. They will also have to understand the financial situation and reconsider their demand of 35 per cent wage hike. We are ready for discussion at the chief ministerial level," Reddy had said.|

KSRTC Staff and Workers Federation General Secretary and All India Trade Union Congress leader H V Anantha Subbarao said, "The unions are ready for a meeting with Chief Minister. Let him call a meeting. We feel sorry that public are suffering, but our concerns should also be addressed."

Meanwhile, stone pelting on buses was reported from different parts of the state like Hassan, Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Belagavi, Shivamogga, Koppal and Chikkamagaluru.

Transport officials said alternative arrangements are being made by giving temporary contract carriage to private operators during the strike.

In the wake of the strike, public were depending on private and own vehicles for commuting even as several commuters complained that private transporters were overcharging.

Transport officials said they have begun crackdown of private transporters who are overcharging.

Transport unions firm on strike, KSRTC buses stay off roads

Daijiworld Media Network-Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Jul 25: The indefinite strike called by the KSRTC unions from Sunday midnight is on.

The union members have called for the state-wide strike demanding a hike in salary.

Though the strike was supposed to start at Sunday midnight, a large number of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses stayed off the roads, leaving several commuters stranded from the evening itself. Some union members damaged a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus at Richmond Circle and thrashed its staff.

The state government authorised deputy commissioners (DC) to take a decision on declaring a holiday based on the situation in their respective districts. While most of the districts have declared holiday for Monday and Tuesday, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts did not declare any holiday.

The Bangalore University has postponed the degree and postgraduate examinations, which were scheduled for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the city police have stepped up security to ensure that there are no untoward incidents.

Last minute appeal fails

The state government’s appeal to the protesting unions to call off the strike went unheard. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “Give priority to public interest and give up the strike call. Consider the impact it will have on the students, poor and working class.” However, the transport unions refused to budge.

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said the government has not yet taken a decision whether to invoke Essential Services Maintenance Act (Esma) against the striking employees.

“All the employees of the four state-run transport corporations are ready to go to jail in case the government decides to invoke Esma,” said H V Anantha Subbarao, general secretary, KSRTC Staff and Workers’ Federation.

35% pay rise is like redoing the entire budget and checking the possibility.
Comparing the long distance charges by Volvo bus from Mangalore to Bangalore Airawata charges are Rs.700/- where as Volvo private buses charging at least Rs100/- less than that. The private buses carrying huge cargo luggage to cover the difference.
KSRTC can cut down the costs by reducing the frequent services to same destination with empty seats, which has to be checked thoroughly by reviewing the performance of each bus. Each bus performance and contribution can be evaluated to control the losses. To have better control, KSTRC can become a Semi Govt so some private sector undertaking will manage with firm control
Using the KSRTC for other subsidiary income earning projects like courier service, advertisement and sign boards, low cost transportation support to move merchandise, Corporate transportation of employees on annual contract, support serive to schools for students transportation which will help to achieve break even and regular collections will contribute to bottom line
The current demand of 30% hike is abnormal, no co will ever do such a huge increase at a time.
This is beyond control and indirectly hinting management to increase the ticket fares by 30%
Govt can share the profits with employees at the end of year

One suggestion to the Government. They must share 25% of the profit with the staff depend upon their direct involvement. Like the Driver and conductor, the mechanic, cleaners must get more percentage. It will help the staff, will turn over in much profit, no strikes, all will give good customer care, Ache Din will come, and all will be happy.

Its too much...no country will be ready to increase 25% salary at a time, maximum is 8 to 10% in which Karnataka govt. agreed. This is just a political motivated strike which pinned by opposition to create unrest in the state. SHAME ON you KSRTC EMPLOYEES for not considering public convenience and disturbing the student for not attending their scheduled exams and your backing shit political party. Govt shall not budge for their demand, let them strike they automatically feel the heat by being hungry for many days.

Even thieves/robbers/cheaters makes lot of money so we cannot compare all these issues. Here the logic is suddenly no Govt. in the world increase govt. employees salary by 25% at a time (it may increase maximum by 8 to 10%) As Karnataka Govt. agreed to increase 10% for time being, the KSRTC employees would have agreed gracefully and back out from the strike. Now it has negative impact on general public and student because of employees’ rigid stance. So they never support KSRTC employees and their behavior is not acceptable at all. If want to strike, let them wear black badge on their shoulder or wrist without effecting normal life of the people. Then govt. itself ashamed and do the needful even public would have support their claim.

While the just demands of the employees needs to be considered, the employees should also remember that the burden of recovering the cost will fall on the commuters. As it stands Karnataka is providing the best transport service to the people and is also the highest priced which the common man can ill afford. The labour Union should consider all these factors. Majority of the citizens of Karnataka work for the private sector and do not get a pay hike like the 6th pay/7th pay commission which the government employees enjoy.
