M'lore: 'Nil' Value Fixed for Houses on SEZ-notified Area

Mangalore, Nov 26: The value of a number of residential buildings at Sankada Bali area of Kalavaru village has been fixed as "nil" after a survey by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB).

Kalavaru is one of the villages that have been notified for the Mangalore Special Economic Zone project. The KIADB is a Government agency conducting the "Joint Measurement Certificate" survey to fix the value of buildings, agricultural produce, and trees on the lands notified for acquisition.

There have been constant promises from Mangalore Special Economic Zone Limited (MSEZ), the district administration, and KIADB that the villagers will be compensated adequately for the sacrifice of their property. But the revelation that their houses are worth nothing has come as a rude shock to these villagers.

Many of the villagers were not told by the KIADB about the value fixed for their houses. Dambaya Poojary (65), a casual labourer who owns a 1,500 sq ft house at Sankada Bali said: "I did not know that the value of my house has been fixed at zero. My neighbour went to the KIADB office to find out the value of his house and that is when he found it out and informed me that my house had been rendered worthless on paper."

The neighbour who informed Poojary is Shivaram Shetty, an agriculturist whose house is built on a plot measuring twenty cents. Shetty's house has also been valued at zero.

Shetty said that since the day he learnt about the valuation, he had been running from pillar to post. "When I first went to the KIADB, the officials initially told me that I needed to speak to the officials at MSEZ Limited. The MSEZ officials directed me back to KIADB. Finally, a KIADB official informed me that there was an error in the valuation but refused to put his statement on record."

The villagers are being made to accept the Rs 36,000-package being offered as interim relief to the "Project Displaced Families" (PDFs). The amount is being given to help PDFs in renting a house till the rehabilitation colony in Kulai gets ready for occupation.

Well. Well. Poor peole's houses are valued 'nil'. If the houses were belongs to Government people's or politicians relatives, then the value of these houses valued in crores even for a hut. This is how our Government is protecting its citizens givng 'nil' value for their properties though they collect a huge amount from the investors. FOr me NO Government care for the poor. Once Inira Gandhi said, our main aim is to eliminate poverty, though she meant poverty, our politicans, be them from any party, carrying it out by eliminating poor.

Because these reckless govt red-tape and casualness, there should not be any "Project Displacements" for SEZs. All the displaced people should immediately be given residence in SEZ officials' houses or KIADB officials' houses.
