Udupi, Dec 5: The residents of Yellur at Padubidri near here, where the coal-based Nagarjuna thermal power project is being constructed, and members of the Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samiti staged a protest in front of deputy commissioner’s office here on Tuesday December 4.

The protest was staged in order to get their grievances redressed.

Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd (NPCL) had controlled the movement of the people residing near the project site, said the members of the affected families as well as members of the Samiti.

They further said that the huge amount of dust is being blown by the civil works, carried out by the company. The work continued even at the nights as a result the locals could not have a sound sleep, they added.

They further urged V Ponnuraj, DC to visit the site and witness the difficulties faced by the locals residing nearby.

DC said that he had little powers as the matter was before the court, hence he could not interfere regarding this matter.

This resulted in a furious altercation with the DC by the members.

The DC held Vijaykumar Hegde, chairman, the executive committee of the Samiti, responsible for misleading the people.

Gopi Pujarti, member of the affected family, urged DC to save them.

A memorandum was submitted by the members of the affected families and the samiti members to the DC seeking immediate action on the matter.
