Mangalore, Dec 5: Tension was in the air for long in the Suratkal region as a result of a clash between members of two different communities following separate assault cases here on Tuesday December 4. However, no major flare up occurred due to these incidents, largely owing to the alertness of the police.

In the morning an altercation took place between two groups over a minor incident in Suratkal. Satish Munchoor, son of BJP Corporator Rajani Dugganna had an argument with one Abdul Khader. This incident soon accelarated into an verbal abuse which then turned violent, as members of both communities started exchanging blows.Khader was badly injured in the attack and had to be admitted to a private hospital in the city.

Later in the evening, three unidentified miscreants wearing masks attacked a cable operator Yashwant Shetty from Krishnapura-Katipalla, while he was on his way back home from office. The miscreants who were on two bikes assaulted Shetty with iron rods, on his head and escaped from the scene. In this assault Shetty sustained serious injuries and had to be shifted to a private hospital.

Meanwhile another incident took place at Angaragundi near Jokatte on the city's outskirts, when another youth was stabbed by unidentified assailants. He too was rushed to a nearby hospital and is said to be battling between life and death, police sources informed. It is surmised by the police that most probably the incident is a retaliatory attack for the morning incident.

In view of all these attacks, police are not taking any chances. Although the situation is in control, they have beefed-up the security in and around Suratkal.
