On August 13, Swathi had gone to her mother and had complained about harassment. But mother told her to be patient and sent her back to her in-laws’ house. When she phoned on the same day to talk to Swathi, there was no reply. Then she phoned Shashi, the neighbour of Bhoja Shetty. When Shashi went to the house, Swathi was found lying semi unconscious as she had consumed poison. Immediately she was taken to a hospital in Moodbidri and then shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru.
Swathi breathed her last without responding to treatment on August 18. Police recorded it as a suicide case.
Now the case has taken a new turn with Varija complaining about dowry harassment. Her complaint says that the harassment prompted her daughter to take the extreme step.
