Public Outcry Stops Work on SEZs in the State

Panaji, Dec 8: Following the public outcry, two companies setting up Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the state have stopped the work until further directions.

"Both the companies, whose SEZs are notified, have informed us that they have stopped the work and will not start it till cabinet committee on infrastructure reviews it," Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat told reporters here.

The cabinet committee on infrastructure had held emergency meeting at CM's residence after strong public protest at proposed SEZ at Kerim in Ponda taluka and mounting pressure on the government to scrap SEZs till the policy is reviewed.

"The work on any of SEZs will not start till committee reviews all the projects," Kamat said.
