Bangalore: HC Awards Heroin Peddler 10 Years of RI

Bangalore, Dec 10: The High Court (HC) has sentenced a person accused of peddling heroin, for 10 years of rigorous punishment and has slapped a fine of Rs 1 lac.  The High Court has also ordered to undergo 5 years of extra punishment, if he fails to pay the fine, as stated in the court verdict. 

The sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), headquartered in New Delhi, had arrested the accused, Sayyed Rahmath Baba, on February 7, 2001 early morning, when he was found aimlessly wondering near National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NIT-K) located at Suratkal near here.  The police hade seized 5kgs of heroin worth crores of rupees in the international market.

At the backdrop of illegal possession of heroin, the sleuths booked the case against Sayyed Rahmath Baba, under NDPS Act. He was produced in the Mangalore special court which sentenced him innocent. But later DRI appealed to HC, against the verdict of Mangalore special court which in turn sentenced him to 10 years RI and slapped heavy fine.
