Mangalore, Dec 13: The auto rickshaw drivers of city went on a flash strike on Tuesday December 11, in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner, protesting against the attack on their colleague, Dinesh Shetty at Alake, near Kudroli, in the city, led by Ivan D’Souza, president, city auto rickshaw drivers' association.

While addressing the protesters, Ivan D’Souza, stated that it is a regular feature in the city, when the accidents occur owing to narrow roads and lanes, that auto drivers are attacked.  But it is advisable to all commuters and pedestrians to be courteous and cooperative, instead of attacking the rickshaw drivers who are of great help to the public in times of emergency.

Though a case was filed with the police with regard to an attack on Dinesh Shetty, no one has been arrested so far. These kinds of incidents are occurring across the city every now-and-then which in turn has caused insecurity among the auto drivers who work almost round the clock.

Rickshaw drivers are a lot unto themselves in most Indian cities and towns, except Bombay, where they are scared of the police. It would be good on the part of Mr. Ivan D'Souza to tell the auto drivers, who are members of his association, to be people friendly and serve them well, instead of behavingly roughly with their clients.

Instead of going on strike the rickshaw drivers should have approached the police and filed a complaint, so that the culprits were nabbed. Going on flash strikes is a double-edged sword, because both the auto rickshaw drivers and passengers will suffer.

The rickshaw drivers in Mangalore are a law unto themselves. It is but natural that people who are at the receiving end of the high handedness of the rickshaw drivers, sometimes react. So instead of blaming the public, the auto drivers association must teach their members to observe the rules & regulations.

On 10th pm, I arrived from Madgaon at 9 pm at the Mangalore Central station. None of the rickshaw drivers were willing to take me to my residence at Pandeshwar. My wife & self had to walk home with the luggage. Three weeks back, I arrived from Trivandrum by Maveli express in the morning at 8 am.

The rickshaw drivers wanted minimum Rs 20 fare, whereas it would have been only Rs. 11.50 by meter. This time also I had to walk home with my bags. Are you listening Mr. Ivan D'Souza? Make the rickshaw drivers behave properly. Then nobody will have a reason to attack them.
