Farmers turn teary eyed as onion prices crash despite bumper crop

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (EP)

Bengaluru, Sep 17: This year has witnessed a bumper crop of onions in the midst of reduced rains. However, it has brought tears in the eyes of farmers due to crash of prices. Farmers grow onions mainly in Chitradurga, Haveri, Bagalkote, Belgaum and Koppala districts with rain and irrigated water. There is a yield of 80 to 90 bags per acre.

Most of the onions grown in the state come to Bengaluru Yashwantpur APMC yard and there is hardly anybody who wants them. Onions were sold between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000 per quintal last year, but the prices now have crashed to Rs 200 and Rs 300 per quintal this year. Onions are supplied to other parts of state also. But there is no demand anywhere.

Farmers pay exorbitant prices on seeds and manure and face the hardship of power failure. They borrow money, but are unable to fetch a suitable price for their produce. They are unable to recover even their wages. There are instances where farmers have left their yield in the field to rot under the circumstances.

Farmers have urged the government to announce suitable support prices for onions and to open a center for their purchase.

Some traders said it is the lowest price in five years. In some places the price has reached as low as one rupee per kg.

When there is demand for onions farmers dont talk about price control. Govt should control the price of essential items,so nobody should suffer.

This is the tricks of stockist . when the farmers selling the onions after the farming. the stockist reduce the price and buy for low price from farmers after they had enough stock and farmers are finished the selling the stockist are controlling the the market by supplying less as per demand and increase the price.

So stockist are earning millions. and farmers are dying.

government must introduce certain law and to protect the farmers.

Some relief to common man at last.
    Blessing in disguise.
Government has to come to the rescue of these farmers and compensate for the loss they have suffered.
Now in Sambaar they could be more onions to relish.

Government should set minimum price protection which should be more than the breakeven cost of farmers.

Farmers are the backbone of the nation. They feed the nation.

If not taken care they might even switch to other means to support their families.

They might even end up life if there are bumper crops but no profit.

Any excessive farm produce should be made available for other states if no demand exists then it should be made available for export. No food item should be allowed to rot.
National level there should be clear registry and government should have control over it.

    People,

If proper temperature and humidity is maintained any fruit or vegetables can be preserved in cold storage for many years....unfortunately we have very few cold storage's...otherwise farmers could have gotten better prices...

We had a Union agriculture minister called Sharad Pawar for 10 years during UPA rule...please ask him how many cold storage's were built during his tenure....and what he was doing then???

Langoo ji, Onion in Cold storage.?!!

Onions can be stored for long period by avoiding the build-up of the CO2 in between the onions.

@Langoo,Belman/Washington,what you are saying might apply to some vegetables, but not to everything.By experience we know, onions can be stored only one year, later they start to spoil.( we do it)

    Rita,

Every vegetable and fruit has a specific preserving temperature and specific relative humidity for storage....Your fridge at kitchen only controls temperature not humidity...

Don't get confused with fridge and cold storage...it last for years if not decades....

@Hallo langoo,I think mistook complete.I never mentioned storage at fridge.Onions are not stored in fridge. As we cultivate the onions here, naturally are stored in a cold and in a dark room but
well ventilated , till next summer.Even farmers here do the same.Even potatoes too same.when for Long time to conserve, needs some handling ,naturally some gas or chemical.without ,not possible.
