Mangalore, Dec 20: Eid ul-Adha is a festival celebrated by Muslims world-wide as a commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismael for Allah. It is one of two Eid festivals, whose basis comes from the Quran. Eid ul-Adha, the festival of sacrifice in Islam, begins with a short prayer followed by a sermon.
Eid ul-Adha is the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijj of the lunar Islamic Calender. The festivities sometimes last for two to three days depending on the country. It is the day after the pilgrims in Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims world-wide, descend from Mt Arafat. It happens to be approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan.
Eid ul-Adha is being celebrated in the city with a great deal of pomp and gaiety. Muslims are seen everywhere dressed in their finest clothing. Special Eid prayers are performed in the mosques across the city, especially in Ullal. Devotees gathered in huge numbers to offer prayers at the Eidgah grounds at Light house hill in the city. After offering prayers they were seen hugging and wishing each other. Muslims brethren who could afford to do so sacrificed their best domestic animals especially goats as a symbol of Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) sacrifice in the city and all over the state.
