Rail fares may be hiked in coming budget

New Delhi, Nov 7 (DHNS): The Indian Railways may increase passenger fare in the coming budget.

According to sources, the ministry is considering a direct increase in the passenger fare as the dynamic fare system introduced in important trains did not help increase revenue on expected lines.

The ministry does not find it logical to increase freight charges, officials said.

“It was anticipated that the flexi-fare system will increase revenue. However, it is not the case; the revenue is going down. A decline in the number of passengers has also been noticed. So, there are suggestions that fares in the passenger segment be increased,” a railway official said.

According to them, the increase across the board may be the best thing to do.

The railways have increased the cost of rail travel by various changes in the fare structure and refund rules. But, it has not been able to reduce the loss incurred in the passenger segment of the railways.

The data on the income and expenditure of the railways during July-September, the second quarter of the financial year, has shown a reduction in freight revenues, despite various measures of freight rationalisation.

Lalu Prasad Yadav, in his tenure as railway minister, showed superb imagination in breaking out of this vicious cycle.

Surplus (before dividends) of Rs 20,000 crore makes the Indian Railways the country's largest profit making entity-it has left behind ONGC by 25 per cent and Reliance Industries by almost double the amount, which registered profits worth Rs 16,000 crore and Rs 10,557 crore, respectively.

When Lalu can turn the largest public sector into surplus profit, why BJP's 'Gujarat Model' is failed to lift?Where is all the revenue is going? If government doesn't have enough money, whom does they need 'bullet train'.

Which ever government is in power and need to increase fare please note
-Need improvement in train compartment seats.
    - Cockroaches/bugs are common nuisance.
    - Toilets stink, no one to clean them till the end of your journey.
    - Bed sheets provided in a/c bogies are torn.
Would request to kindly improve the services, along with the fare increase. Talking from my atsyagandha experience.

Population explosion! People cannot expect the government to take the full burden to provide all basic necessities at throw away price. They cannot print currency to substitute the cost. Marginal increase is inevitable.

Speculative journalism based on unnamed sources have as much credibility as my grandma predicting whether India will play cricket Pakistan in near future (while both have been playing hockey though).

Railways have so much of unexploited land, space for advertisement, station areas for commercial exploitation.
Some tracks, workmen and premises are idle, not finding ways and means to convert them to generate more revenue.
Railways can surely generate more income by way providing lodging and boarding facilities.
Not initiating anything to increase revenue.
Hell bent on Rail fare increase to burden common man.

Its better not to have an advancement in infrastructure , not to have clean trains , not to get hygiene foods , not have fast trains than to see increase in cost of travel.

Mr Suresh Prabhu stop all your modernisation plans, people are not ready to pay extra money for the travel...
