Three jawans killed, four injured in ambush in Assam

Guwahati, Nov 19 (PTI): A group of ULFA(I) and NSCN(K) militants today ambushed an army convoy at Pengeri in upper Assam's Tinsukia district, killing three Army jawans and injuring four others seriously.

The group of 15 militants attacked the army convoy early this morning and damaged two vehicles killing one jawan on the spot and seriously injuring six others, a Defence Spokesman told PTI. Two of the injured succumbed to their injuries on way to the hospital, he said.

Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Mugdhajyoti Mahanta said the ambush was carried out jointly by NSCN(K) and ULFA(I) militants carrying very sophisticated weapons including rocket propelled grenade (RPG), AK-47 rifles and mortars.

The security personnel retaliated but the militants managed to escape and it was yet to be ascertained whether there were any casualty or injuries among the militants, Mahanta said.

A huge crater was created at the site of the ambush and two vehicles - a jeep and a Shaktiman truck were completely damaged.

Operations have been intensified in the area with army, police and CRPF personnel surrounding the area and launching massive combing operations. Helicopters have pressed into service for the purpose, the spokesman said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and took stock of the situation. Sonowal briefed the Home Minister about the incident, the situation arising of the explosion and the steps taken to nab the culprits.

"I am deeply anguished by the death of Army soldiers in a blast in Tinsukia and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured," Singh said.

The Assam Chief Minister strongly condemned the incident and directed Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay to rush to spot and review the situation. "We condemn the incident strongly. Operations will be intensified and stern action will be taken against the militants. None will be spared," he said here.

This is the second attack by ULFA(I) at Pengeri in a span of three days. On November 16, a man was killed and two were seriously injured when a vehicle carrying new currency notes to a tea garden for payment of wages to its labourers was fired upon.

Upper Assam was ULFA’s bastion and it is from here that the BJP has given a ticket to Bhaskar Sarma. Sarma was a former ULFA militant who was shot during the crackdown on the ULFA by the Indian Army in 1992. After spending months in hospital and then in jail, he was released on bail. ULFA has always accused Sarma of being involved in the secret killings and this makes him the most controversial candidate in the last Assam election.
Golap, or Anup Chetia as he is known to the world, is one of the founders of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), an insurgent group formed in 1979 to create a sovereign Assam. Chetia brought his cousin Paresh Baruah, then an Indian Railway employee and a good football player, into insurgency.
The detractors of ULFA were surprised how within a month and a half of his extradition from Bangladesh, Chetia could manage bail in all pending Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) cases and in a 1986 murder case in Golaghat. Also, is it just a coincidence that Chetia's lawyer Bijan Mahajan is a prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) face in the state and also a party spokesman?
ULFA is not the only militant group that has played an indirect role in Assam politics. As recent as in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Bodo underground group National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Songbijit (NDFB-S) allegedly helped the BJP candidate in Tezpur constituency, for which an FIR was registered in Biswanath Chariali police station. The BJP denied the charge.

Political alignment compromising internal security of the nation is not new to BJP.It did in Assam and Nagaland. Now repeating the success to try in Manipur.

How come terror attacks happening after demonetization also!!! That means scheme is utter failure. Even army jawans not safe under Modi ruling. What protection they can give to the common man. Both army and Police failed to stop the violence in Kashmir and shameless & helpless BJP govt told School teachers to protect the schools from the burning. Impotency of spineless Modi govt is pushing the country into chaos and the country is becoming helpless in the hands of terrorists. God save India.
