Madikeri, Nov 25: The 26th Codava National Day was celebrated with much fervour at Gandhi Maidan here on Thursday November 24.
The celebrations was held under the aegis of Codava National Council (CNC), which has been fighting for the fulfillment of several demands, including special recognition to Codava Land, for the past 26 years.
Codava men, women and children from various places took part in the event.
The celebrations began with a vibrant procession depicting the Codava culture, accompanied by the traditional 'dudikott pat'. The processions passed through the main streets of Madikeri, via General Thimmaiah circle and culminated at Gandhi Maidan.
Several cultural programmes entertained the gathering. Leaders who had contributed their might to the Codava welfare were remembered.
Senior media personality Deepak Thimmaiah was the guest of honour on the occasion.
During a meeting held after the programme, a 12-point Codava Declaration was passed urging grant of status to Coorg as a union territory (UT), special package to Codava land, autonomy to Codava land under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution and other demands.
