New Delhi, Dec 12 (India Today): RSS ideologue and renowned chartered accountant S Gurumurthy said that the new Rs 2,000 notes will be phased out over the next few years.
Speaking to India Today, Gurumurthy said that the Rs 2,000 note was introduced only as a bridge to meet the gap in cash being taken out of circulation.
The RSS ideologue said the government was committed to moving towards smaller denomination notes and high denomination notes would be done away within the next five years.
Gurumurthy is a key member of the RSS-backed Vivekananda India Foundation.
Besides, the seniors in the Narendra Modi government have been closely consulting him while deciding on how to deal with demonetisation.
He said that Rs 500 should be the highest denomination currency in India, followed by Rs 250 and Rs 100.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes on November 8 and introduction of new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000. The announcement, among other things, was criticised for the launch of Rs 2,000 note.
Citing the case of Rs 1,000, which has been totally banned, the Opposition said Rs 2,000 will encourage more corruption and hoarding of black money. They said it would become easier for the corrupt to carry, transact in and hoard Rs 2,000 notes than when Rs 1,000 was the legal tender.
