Mangalore: Sandesha Awards Presented to Achievers

Mangalore, Feb 2: The prestigious 'Sandesha Awards 2008' presentation ceremony was held at Sandesha College of Fine Arts premises on the evening of Saturday, February 2.
Noted artistes and professionals Subrya Chokkadi (Kannada literature), Laxman Kodase (journalism), Dolphy Lobo Konkani literature), A V Navada (Tulu literature), Francis D'Cunha (education), Arundhati Naag (arts), Harry D'Souza special recognition) and Shivasanchara Drama Troupe (media education) were presented with this years' Sandesha Award for outstanding achievements in their respective fields.
Presenting the awards, Union Administrative Reforms Commission chairman M Veerappa Moily said, “ no might of a powerful king is permanent on this earth. But the power of culture and literature can survive for many centuries.” “There is no linguistic boundary for culture.” he opined . “ Culture can communicate for a long distance. A human being’s mind would be totally blank if there is no culture” . he said.
Receiving the award, well known Kannada litterateur Subraya Chokkadi on a lighter note said, “ awards are sold for the asking in the open market today and one has to file an application to get the award. Therefore, it is not a matter of pride to speak about today’s awards.” he said . “ But Sandesha is conferring awards without all these lobbies.”
Rt Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, Bishop of Mangalore, presided over the function. Louise Fernandes Khurshid, former MLA of UP, Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao , among others , were also present on this occasion.
Fr Francis Lewis, director of Sandesha Foundation, welcomed the gathering. Dr Na D'Souza briefed the gathering on the Sandesha Awards.
