Mangalore, Feb 25: The biennial meeting of the Jesuit research scholars from all over India was held in the IT Centre of St Aloysius College here Saturday February 23 and Sunday February 24. Twenty Jesuit fathers from various colleges from across the country gathered for the meeting.
The meeting was inaugurated by Prof Patrick Tauro, an eminent scientist and director of Mangalore Biotech Co. The theme of the meetign was 'Science and Students.'
Dr Tauro spoke on the topic of rejuvenating science teaching and promoting research in under-graduate colleges. He praised the Jesuit scholars for their commitment to research and teaching and at the same time said that much more has to be done to enthuse young boys and girls to take up science degree programmes.He also stressed the need for restructuring the syllabi and evaluation system in universities and colleges.
Jason D'souza, a second year degree student of St Aloysius College, who has been doing research in nanotechnology spoke on how an undergraduate student can be motivated to do research. He said that more encouragement should to be given to young students and resources made available to do research as and when they pursue their regualr degree studies.
The fathers who were gathered shared information about their work in various fields. Dr Ignacimuthu, former vice-chancellor, Madras University and coordinator of Jesuits in Science in India was also present. Dr Manickkam, who has the best collection of ferns from all over the country also shared his experiences.
Fr Albert Williams from Loyola College, Chennai, spoke on how to make mathematics interesting to students at the under-graduate level. Fr Denzil Lobo was the local organizer of the biennial meet.
