India to witness extremely hot summer : Meteorological Department

New Delhi, Mar 1 (Agencies) : IN LINE with the global trend, 2016 was one of the warmest years on record for India, the Met department said on Tuesday, while predicting hotter than usual summer in 2017 till June at least. In its summer outlook for this year, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that temperatures — minimum, maximum as well as the mean — are likely to be “above normal” till June in every meteorological sub-division of the country. Northwest India and the plains near the Himalayas are likely to face particularly warmer summer this year with temperatures likely to be more than 1°C above normal.

The IMD said the deviation from the normal temperature would reduce progressively while moving towards the southern regions of the country. It said there was “47 per cent probability” of maximum temperatures being more than normal in the states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Telangana, and a few other regions. It warned that these areas were likely to experience “above normal moderate to severe heat wave conditions” during this period.

The IMD said “border line” to “weak” La Nina conditions were currently prevailing over the Pacific Ocean and these were likely to weaken further and become neutral ahead of the monsoon season. As such, the sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean were unlikely to have any influence on the summer temperatures over the country, it said. It said 2016 happened to be the warmest year for India since 1901.

    Mr. Rajesh,
When one tree is cut for whatever reason, as explained by you, we should make it a point to plant at least three or four saplings in its place to maintain the ecological balance. There is no dearth of space for planting the saplings. But how many of us do that? Unless the government comes down heavily on those who cut the trees, for sure the forest cover will go down drastically. As citizens we should also understand that is it incumbent on us to do our bit to safeguard the trees. We people go in search of trees for parking our vehicles but how many of us stop and tend to a tree that is on the verge of falling? At all times we are eager to exercise our rights but when it is time to fulfill our duties, we fail miserably.

Go, cut more trees and then expect the weather to be kind to you. We reap what we sow. Why only this year, with each passing year, the weather is bound to get hotter and hotter. Absolutely no doubt about that. Politicians and the real estate builders who are largely responsible for the felling of trees will spend the summer in air conditioned bungalows. What about the poor people who cannot afford the luxury of air conditioners? Spare a thought to the hapless persons working in the hot sun.

Dear Vishal, first of all we should know why tress are cut. trees are cut by poor people for firewood. trees are cut to to create more areable land for Agriculture. Trees are cut for Housing & shelter. trees are cut to make way for roads. Trees are cut for industrial uses. Can you tell me how can we stop the above when we have a burgeoning population, . more the population, more the requirement for areable land for agriculture. therefore one best solution is to cut down the population. but can we do that.?
