Bengaluru: After scrapping of flyover project, citizens demand alternative plan

Bengaluru, Mar 5 (PTI): A group of citizens today staged a demonstration here demanding that government come out with an alternative plan to decongest the road that connects the city with its international airport and surrounding areas, following its decision to scrap a steel flyover project.

Holding placards, the group, claiming to be residents of northern part of the city, along which the road connecting the airport passes through, said they were not adamant about the steel flyover, but want some alternative arrangements to be made to ease the traffic.

Some of them criticised those opposed to the steel flyover project, accusing them of being anti-development and of showing fake environmental concern, as there was plan in place for mass planting of trees.

"We are not adamant that we want only steel bridge, a cement bridge, elevated highway or a metro is also fine, we want something to be done to decongest traffic on this road and to reduce time taken to commute along this stretch," a resident of Yelahanka said.

"All of a sudden the steel bridge project has been called of without any alternative plan..come out with an alternative, there is nothing planned to substitute it. Look at the traffic on this road," another citizen said.

The Karnataka government on Thursday had announced its decision to scrap the controversial steel flyover project following allegations of kickback of crores of rupees.

The Rs 1,800-crore project had been facing stiff opposition from citizen groups over environmental concerns and doubts over its sustainability model. Questions were also raised regarding escalation in its cost. An estimated 812 trees would have had to be felled for the project that was stayed by the National Green Tribunal last year.

Recent allegations of crores of rupees received as kickback in connection with the project, allegedly mentioned in diary entries of Congress MLC Govindaraju, had also marred the project.

Govindaraju's alleged diary entries, reportedly consisting of information relating to payoffs made by state Congress leaders to the party's central leaders, have kicked up a political storm in the state.

There is difference between roots of date trees and other trees. The roots of big trees (which are in Bangalore) are deep as compared to date trees in the Middle-East. Roots of date trees do not go wide & deep. With regards to Metro, they'll use the same track for future expansion and it's people who are travelling & unlike vehicles on the road which need more space.

    Dear Friends,
I live in North Bangalore and I would like to myself say that Steel flyover or the Concrete flyover is not the solution nor it will solve the problem. Let us consider the other flyovers that BDA had built Has it solved the problem?. Eg : Flyover from Electronic city ending at Silk board , the Diary circle underpass and the Diary circle flyover , the K.R Puram flyover etc. Non of these flyover have solved the traffic issues but the traffic is still piling up at the end point junction and people are getting stuck . The simple reason is every project is unplanned and the steel flyover will also be a big failure . If the government has real interest in solving the traffic issues
1)why cant they open the alternative road to the airport via Hennur . Do they need 3 to 5 years for tarring the 500 mts road ? when the alternative road is already there , they have not opened it as they may loose toll collection on the existing airport road which is influenced by the present toll collectors
    2) Why has the metro work not taken up from Nagavara to Gottigere ? . Do they need to wait for the first phase to complete which has taken more than 10 years
    3) why have they not speed up on the skywalk front in front of esteem mall from last 2 years . Do they need 2 years to construct a skywalk as it was commenced 2 years back .
    3) Why have they not put a single BMTC bus from North Bangalore to Central Bangalore ? Nor there is a single direct bus from North Bangalore to places like Indiranagar , Domlur , Shanthinagar etc . Poor transport system is another main reason that has forced people to take private veichles out .
Hence, with all this in mind , it is ver clear that our Govt and Politicians have their own personal interest

The main reason for all this mess to happen is politics . we have alot full of solutions but they want to implement rather looking for option and opportunity to make some money out of the projects by fooling the public

    Mr. G.M. Hegde,

In the past years so many protests took place with Placards, demanding to scrap the Steel Flyover. Who do U think spent so much money to print such Placards from time to time?

Citizens rather buy a tin of paint and make their own placcards unlike hired people with sponsored placcards. Looks like thete is too much at stake.

Best solution is to connect the present metro line to Majestic at one end and International Airport at the other. Build a world class metro terminal at Majestic and introduce metro & buses to airport at regular intervals like on an hourly basis. This would also reduce congestion on airport road. I doubt that underground tunnel would be economically feasible.

Buses r flying to Airport from most of the routes from Bangalore. Need of the hour is a flyover[either Steel/Concrete or Cement]. Let Environmentalist & Pollution Control dept. Control the smoke emitting from the Autos & Polluting the whole Bangalore City.

Most of the citizens specially senior citizens like me can't go by Auto with Luggage to Majestic & then wait for the Metro, which is very inconvenient. Most of the Metro Stations have no Vehicle parking facility in Bangalore.

In my opinion, building of flyover would not solve the problem as more & more vehicles are added to the road every year and there is limited space available to build fly overs. Also if they keep on cutting trees for new flyovers how will the people breathe as more & more people migrate to cities. Metro is better solution as more coaches can be added to the same train with same track with more frequency. Also road congestion would be reduced if more people especially younger generation travel by metro. Also nowadays almost all airlines do not allow luggage like they used to do before & almost all things are available everywhere. So it's best to carry whatever necessary and travel light.

Rob Stan, While road widening in Abu Dhabi, some years ago they uprooted the huge Date Trees & replanted the same trees nearby after the road widening work was over. Here the Government has agreed to plant more samplings than the actual trees they r going to cut. If there is pollution in Bangalore, it is entirely due to the smoke emitting from Autos & some of the buses. Due to this I get admitted frequently in the Hospitals in Bangalore when I stop Breathing. It is the Duty of Environmentalist & Pollution Control to stop it Completely. What is the Guarantee, that they will not cut trees if & when Metro is going to build? How many years it will take to build a World Class Metro like the one in Singapore?

From what I understand, out if the 600 or so people who were protesting hardly 10 percent were Kanandigas, rest all Malyalese or people who could not utter one proper sentence of Kannada. North Bangalore has become of den of Non Kanandigas, most of them are imports of Kerala and big supporter of K J George, who is a Malyalee
