Pope Francis may allow married Catholic men as priests

Rome, Mar 10 (Agencies) : Pope Francis has said he is open to married men becoming priests to combat the Roman Catholic Church's shortage of clergy, according to CNN report

In an interview with German newspaper Die Zeit, Pope Francis said the lack of Catholic priests was an "enormous problem" for the Church, and indicated he would be open to a change in the rules governing eligibility for the priesthood.

"We need to consider if 'viri probati' could be a possibility," he said. "If so, we would need to determine what duties they could undertake, for example, in remote communities."

Viri probati is the Latin term for "tested men" or married men of outstanding faith and virtue.

The option would allow men who are already married to be ordained as priests. But single men who are already priests would not be allowed to marry, according to the Pope.

"Voluntary celibacy is not a solution," he said.

Protestant married priests who convert to Catholicism can continue to be married and be a Roman Catholic priest, providing they have their wives' permission.

And Eastern Catholic churches that are in communion with the Roman Catholic Church can also maintain their tradition of married priests.

The Roman Catholic Church believes priests should not marry based on certain passages in the Bible, and because it believes that the priest acts "in persona Christi" (in the person of Christ) and should therefore be celibate, like Christ.

Pope Francis in his book, "On Heaven and Earth," said that "For the time being, I am in favor of maintaining celibacy with the pros and cons that it has, because it has been ten centuries of good experiences more often than failure."

Religion is man- made. JESUS came to show us the WAY to the FATHER. The early Christians were known as "THE FOLLOWERS OF THE WAY". It was only later at Antioch that they came to be called Christians.

The most important thing at all times is the GOLDEN TEACHING OF CHRIST. Nothing can surpass it. It suffices to follow it simply and plainly. That is what is truly needed.

Laws were and are made by men. The Church has therefore many laws. The Church has adapted itself to changing times but with caution. Generally the Church is very conservative, slow to change. People in the Church go far ahead and accept change. The Church authorities show a conservative attitude. So after much scandal and also shortage of priests in several parts of the world, the Church is now contemplating lifting of celibacy or having married men as priests. A welcome change for the good of the Church.

This is a good move. Religions whether Hinduism or Christianity are well known for making stringent rules and regulations in the name of God. Traditionally, in R.C the only way of becoming a successful person was to become a priest. However it has changed.

Religions should have less rules and regulations and be easy to follow.

In America about 50 percent of Roman catholic churches don't have priests. This is good idea but they must give this chance to the elderly people who serve the churches only on religious intention.

GOD BLESS OUR POPE. Despite very difficult situations he going through, he is giving a serious thought with regard to celibacy of priests whether.

Our Pope is a practical man. He has realized the fact about shortage of priests all over the world. He is now giving a serious thought to having married men as priests. After all apostles of Christ were married men and they continued as his ministers.

kudos to our modern Holy Father who is indeed great and a practical man.

Not sure, changes in religious dogmas are for better or worst. Christianity, unlike other major religions, over time, have made changes to suit changing times, dwindling followers, personal suitability and so on.
Being human,"Celibacy", in priestly life , is holy indeed. But is celibacy the only cause for dwindling clergy or some other factors are causes?
Religious beliefs, to a large extent , are questionable but existence of the Creator or God is undisputed by majority of the believers.
Do we need religious dogmas to worship God? I wonder.

Those religion or cult that changes and adapts over times to practical conditions may only be true thing to follow for It's follower's. Not the ones stuck & unwilling to change from pre dinosaurs' era.

I hope this is your opinion only and for your cult and religion. Funny part is that religion itself screams that it is the one and only true religion and now you add a caveat that an ever adapting religion is the only true religion. How many changes should you need to to deem it ultimate. Do we even need such a confirmation. Are we so insecure ?.
Isn't religion/cult supposed to be all about spirituality in any case?, and shouldn't this be a constant ?. For example being humble, honest and respectful to other fellow humans which is pretty much part of every religion and cult .. should this change ? to something like 'Chalu', 'Conniving' or 'opportunistic' to accommodate today's changing world ?. Is the kingdom moving into an apartment ? Come one .....
