Mangaluru: Crackdown on drug menace in college campuses, other places - 19 arrested

Mangaluru, Apr 5: In a crackdown on drug menace in the city, police personnel here conducted raids at various spots including college campuses on Tuesday April 4, and arrested 19 persons found to be engaged in ganja sale and consumption.

Two persons who were selling ganja and eight who had consumed it were taken into custody from near a college at Bondel here. Kavoor police, who conducted this raid, confiscated 600 grams of ganja from them. Prashant from Moodushedde, and Gopal from Kenjaru and eight others who had consumed ganja were arrested. Gopal is an accused in four murder cases.

Mohammed Saleem alias Siri Saleem (29), resident of Someshwar K C Road, who was found to be trying to sell ganja to students near a college at Neermarga Merlapadavu was arrested. He is also named as an accused in murder case which happened at Sakleshpur. He was arrested by rural police. Sahul Hamid, who was with Saleem at the time, succeeded in running away. 900 grams ganja was seized from Saleem's possession.

Eight persons, Tilakraj (23) from Urwa, Harshit Shetty (24) from Kulshekhar, Chandrahas (25) from Maroli, Prajwal (37) from Ladyhill, Abubakker Siddique (22) from Yedapadavu, Noorul Hassan (27), and Mohammed Junoon (21), both from Yedapadavu, and Afwan (20) from Porkody were arrested for consuming ganja.

Barke police inspector, Rajesh, police sub-inspector, Umesh, and other staff arrested these persons. On being subjected to medical tests, the fact that they had consumed drugs, was confirmed. Cases stand registered against all the arrested accused.

    criminal activities drug menace on the rise. Police have to curb all such illegal activities. Govt. has to appoint all the thousand vacant posts and post them where shortage of police staff found. Otherwise how can control all such criminal activities.

    PLEASE PUT THIS DRUG SELLERS BEIND BARS. DONT GIVE BAIL. SEND USERS TO REHABILITATION CENTERS. LOCAL AUTHORITIES / COLLEGES/ SECONDARY SCHOOLS ARE STILL NOT SERIOUS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. SMALL CHILDREN ALSO ADDICTED TO DRUGS.
    IF U NEGLECT THIS , OUR TULUNADU WILL BE SECOND PUNJAB. WHO EVER SUPPORTING TO LEGALIZE THE DRUGS , I THINK ARE DRUG USERS AND NO NORMAL PERSON WILL SUPPORT THIS DRUG MAFIA.

    Drug menace is rampant in many colleges in metro cities, especially in Bangalore. , many of these colleges boast of hi tech facilities, rules, placement, but neglect students addition to drugs . Govt colleges University are good

    This is a very serious issue. Hope the Police will interrogate the matter with fervour and without any pressure from outside agencies. It's a matter of our Students' future and their families peaceful living. I request Team Daijiworld to keep a tab on this.
    Regarding legalizing or no, my take is that it's for the Government to decide, but nevertheless Students have no business dealing with or consuming such mind-altering substances. Period.

    Very scary nowdays even to read the blogs and forum. People are seeing commenting / supporting anti nationals and also ganja / cannibies selling / consuming in college campus. god save the country. some people even try to give religious support and many supports it.

    Can anyone enlighten me where in IPC it is mentioned that smoking ganja is a crime.

    Does the rule apply if it is consumed with sweetened milk as bhang?

    I agree that this will be beneficial to the economy and keeping it illegal does not make sense but which court or government in India will endorse this idea....probably the party who fights for legalization will loose its vote base and will be named ganja party of India by the people....educating the people is governments job but I dont think this will happen during our life time unless you think of contesting the elections and bringing the change...

    Very very easy to crackdown. But collage management must take firm steps. Make it compulsory BLOOD test in every collage. But colleges management neglecting this because they may loose the students.

    Always when news article claims that drug peddlers have been caught. But what they are really caught with is marijuana (cannabis), which is a harmless thing when compared to a cigarette.

    Forget rest of the drug, but why is marijuana really banned? it has been used in india since ancient times. Dont believe me check the below, which I found just by googling it.

    If yoga can be practised on a pretext that it is practised in ancient India why can't the same logic be applied for cannabis.? India adopted the ban on cannabis simply because USA adopted it. Now that it is even legal in some states in USA, its about time we legalised cannabis and let us enjoy what ancient indians enjoyed.

    We know it is good but these people use it for bad causes...people who smoke peacefully are never caught because they dont do it openly...I believe that smoking cannabis should not be made legal because this can seriously effect the young minds and all they will do is stay high all the time than concentrating on their studies...

    Dear Sachin,

    There is nothing wrong with smoking Marijuana. Now there are many of those who don't smoke Ganja and are still anti-social and hostile many of whom are all around us.
    Marijuana does not make a person violent. It is a false idea that is being spread due to lack of Knowledge.

    Marijuana is made legal in many parts of the world. The USA has grown popular in the legalization of Marijuana when they were the ones who had forced many countries like India to Ban the substance (look up Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985). Marijuana has been clinically researched to prove its medical benefits to fight cancer, reduce epilepsy, migraines, insomnia and many other medical conditions. (look up cannabis oil benefits and treatment)

    If legalized in India, it can be very beneficial to the economy and the health index. Imagine this, you will never require taking another prescription drugs which actually kills you. Smoking Tobacco actually kills you. There have been no reports of deaths caused by smoking Marijuana, I hope you know how many people die just due to Alchohol consumption around the world AND ITS LEGAL!

    There are many other incidents that I could share with you, but there is only a little I can share on this platform.

    That's exactly that - ''you believe''. I seriously doubt that you have done any research about cannabis affecting young minds. What you said can be even said about cigarettes or alcohol. So why are those sold?

    And for people who disagreed with me please read up about cannabis and its benefits.

    India must legalise cannabis so that it will provide thousands of people with a means to make living. Keeping it illegal does not make any sense.
