Mangalore, Mar 16: 'World Kidney Day' (WKD) is being observed in more than 80 countries and territories and 6 continents. WKD is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF) and is held every second Thursday in March world over.
Countless events take place around the world to spread the message that Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is common harmful and treatable. The theme for this year's celebrations is 'Amazing Kidneys.' In the city, KMC hospital located at Ambedkar circle too observed 'World Kidney Day' by promoting genetically related transplants.
A press release issued by the hospital informs that a kidney provided by a relative is always a better match than any unrelated live donor or cadaver transplants. The reason for this being that there is less chance of rejection and the recipient will not have to take as much (immuno suppressive) medicines.
Moreover there will be less waiting time after the evaluation for a living related transplant unless the donor needs to have some medical problems taken care of. Fewer people need temporary dialysis after a living related transplant than after a cadaver transplant.
The donor will need about 6-8 weeks to recover. With these advantages, the success rate for genetically related transplants is more than that of unrelated transplants, the release adds. WKD was also celebrated in Manipal by the KMC, launching a screening camp at the KMC hospital premises, from March 13 to 20 on the occasion of World Kidney Day.
The said camp was unveiled on Thursday March 13, by the KMC Dean Dr P Sripathi Rao, who in his inaugural speech emphasized that it is crucial to detect kidney diseases at an early stage. Secondly importance must be given to public education programs about kidney diseases, in order to curb the alarming rise of kidney diseases in the country, informs the release.
Moreover even the Manipal Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Bangalore on the occasion of WKD launched a free kidney check-up programme at its premises on every Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm for a year. This announcement was made by Dr Sudarshan Ballal, director of the Institute. Commissioner of police N Achuta Rao and bowling coach of the Indian team Ventakesh Prasad was present at the Kidney Day celebrations.
