Serve 'fixed' amount of food at restaurants: Minister Ram Vilas Paswan

New Delhi, Apr 11 (Deccan Chronicle): Food wastage is a major concern all over the world and India has a large amount being wasted for a country where millions have to sleep without any food. While the French already have a law against food wastage and organisations in India are running initiatives to take leftover food from eateries to feed the poor, the government of India has now stepped in.

Weeks after PM Modi expressed concern about food wastage urging citizens to refrain from what he described as injustice, the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan has asked for the amount of food served at restaurants to be fixed.

He told a leading news organisation that a lot of food is being wasted at restaurants and called a meeting with the food industry representatives to discuss standardisation of how much could be served. He also discussed if there is any legal provision to fix how much will be included in one portion.

He said that while this is a way to ensure uniformity, they don’t wish to control anything. The system will require restaurants to give in writing how much pieces of chicken, or chapatti or a certain food item one portion will have.

Paswan described it as a personal initiative which he came up with after PM Modi’s comment in his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat.’

    Why only Restaurants;

    Ram Vilas Paswan
Many a poor people eat at a lot of affordable restaurants and they often lick their plates clean and dry, so no food wastage there; now if you tell these affordable restaurants to serve 'FIXED' which the restaurant owners would warmly welcome as grossly 'REDUCED' then the poor person will have to buy two meals instead of one to quench his hunger.

Now to where you Ram Vilas Paswan should actually look for curtailing food wastage:
Posh Parties hosted by Ministers, MLAs, Heads of Government Departments etc. etc.,
Wedding parties of the rich where people hide their faces behind mountains of food,
Five star hotels; five star restaurants
and finally the Government Granaries which hoard, and then dump tons of contaminated grains in pits instead of distributing them to poor hungry Indians.

Serve Fixed amount of food is not the solution, how they calculate a measurement of each person.
This need to think every individual person how much he wants. Rate also High & servicing food also fixed this is not fair

It is a good thought in the right direction...
Implementation of the scheme must be well supervised...
Lot of food is just thrown in many parties...
As Mr. Abdul wrote it is not left over spitten food that will be distributed...
But what has remained on the buffet baskets...
    Go on... Do it India...

Next they will decide how much money one can spend for a day or month and on what you can spend...because as per their logic money is being wasted on unnecessary things

Note: I am against wasting food. But imposing a ban on quantity of food being prepared is something I have unheard of. For these people everything what Modi tells is 'Veda Vakya'

    @ Ram Vilas Paswan
Why don't you stop imposing taxes on hotel bills and charge certain percentage (5%) on total bill, which can be utilized for feeding poor?

Shame on this minister ! Instead of distributing 15 Lakh Rupees to every citizen, he is asking Restaurants to serve the leftover food to the poor. People are trying to ban the 'Madey snana' in the temples now, but NDA govt is initiating to give 'Madey food' to the poor. Rich people will eat at restaurants and whatever they left in their plates will be given to the poor. How the minister can guarantee the people that Restaurants will not give the food from picking from their garbage box. We have to protest against this and minister should be sacked immediately.

Take a deep breath and stay calm. Go back to commenting on petty religious stuff as your comment reminded me of a film dialogue where the dumb politician is shouting the water will lose it qualities after it is used to generate electricity .

Modi, Yogi you all people live with so many poojas, upwas you hardly eat, hardly sleep. And we the ordinary people eat heavily and waste half of what we eat.. many of us don't even know what it costs what hardship is associated, to bring one plate meals to the table.

excellent initiative.. I am sure the sicklars will cry foul... they will never realize the inner message in this.
