Mangalore, Mar 20: Eid Milad, which is both the birth and death anniversary of Prophet Mohammad, was observed with great religious fervour all across the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Thursday March 20.
A large number of Muslims do not believe in celebrating birthdays or death anniversaries because there is no historical evidence that such was the practice of Prophet Mohammad. Accordingly, similarly large numbers of Muslims do not celebrate, but only observe, the birth anniversary of the Prophet Mohammad on 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal of the Islamic lunar calendar year.
The extent of the celebrations, on this occasion, is restricted because of the fact that the same marks the death anniversary of Prophet Mohammd as well.
On this occasion public meetings were held in the mosques where religious leaders and scholars made speeches on different aspects of the life of Prophet Mohammd in city. The stories of the Prophet’s birth, childhood, youth and adult life, his character, teachings, sufferings, and forgiveness of even his most bitter enemies, his fortitude in the face of general opposition, leadership in battles, bravery, wisdom, preaching and his final triumph through Allah’s mercy over the hearts of people were narrated in detail.
Special duff processions were held at Thokkottu, Ullal, Kannur etc on Thursday to mark Eid Milad. Hundreds of children sang songs and made their way through city streets praising the mercy of Allah and thanking for the gift of Prophet Mohammad to humankind. Even in and around Udupi, special processions were held in which children sand songs and salutations with religious fervour and devotion.
