Mangaluru: Forward photos of traffic violators to Kudla WhatsApp Group - Police

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 5: City deputy commissioner of police (DCP), K M Shantaraju, advised people to click photos of two-wheelers who violate traffic rules by either not wearing helmets or carrying three persons in a single vehicle, and send the same to Kudla WhatsApp Group bearing No. 9480802312.

He was reacting to complaints made by the people in the phone-in programme conducted from the office of the city police commissioner on Sunday. "We have been taking action against those who do not wear helmets, but violations continue to happen. Therefore, we request people to cooperative with us by taking photographs of people riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets or carrying people beyond capacity and send the same to the above number so that action can be taken against the concerned," he explained.

People who took part in the programme came up with various complaints. Some said that auto rickshaw drivers at city junction railway station have been collecting exorbitant hire charges, vehicles are driven recklessly from opposite directions in one-way roads, vehicles are parked on the road near a garage on Nanthoor-Pumpwell road and other shops elsewhere, vehicles carrying construction debris are driven without properly covering the materials etc. Some wanted branches of trees touching power cables to be cut down. A demand to erect barricade opposite Samruddhi Hall near Kankanady Garody to restrain vehicles from over-speeding was made. Some others wanted proper footpaths to be provided by the side of all the roads in the city, and pointed out that youngsters are commonly seen occupying seats meant for senior citizens in buses.

The DCP revealed that discussion over re-opening of prepaid counter at city junction railway station is going on and there is a possibility of the issue getting solved shortly. He said cases of violating rules and driving vehicles on the wrong way in the one-way road near Milagres cross road will be dealt with sternly. A complainant pointed out that eight educational institutions are located between Vamanjur and Mangal Jyothi within a stretch of 500 metres but because of the absence of road humps in this region, students and their parents are experiencing problems in crossing the road.

The DCP said that erection of humps is governed by certain rules and that this issue would be brought to the knowledge of the department concerned. On the demand to build protective fencing on both sides of the railway gate at Jokatte to avoid people from directly walking cross the tracks, he said he would write to railway department. There was a suggestion to demolish M V Shastri Memorial bus shelter on Kadri Road that has become redundant and create a parking lot in its place. Shantaraju said the traffic police will take stock of the situation and do the needful.

City crime branch assistant sub-inspector, Sudarshan, and head constable, Purushotham, were present.

Citizens can send 1000 over pictures to the traffic or RTO. What action and improvement you will bring to the whole traffic violation episode.
    1. No parking bays for vehicle.
    2. parking lots and footpaths are occupied by street vendors by paying protection money to the police who turn a blind eye on such issues.
    3. MCC once in a while as a white wash does clearing of footpaths and parking lots special in central market area.
    4. Auto drivers who are senseless will park in the middle of the road, while street vendors occupy the auto rickshaw parking bays.
    5. Market street vendors are literally on the roads, makes it difficult for both traffic and general public even to walk on the road.
    6. Give due consideration to the Senior citizens of Mangalore who have stopped going out from their home due to safety reason.
    7. Bus completion claimed a few human lives, and still there is no improvement on their behaviours.
    Jai Hind.

Mr. Shantharaju the deputy commissioner of Police is a kind person by nature - kind to any one who goes to him with legitimate problems. His present attitude with regard to the two wheelers and three wheelers is fully justified. The offenders today are the bus drivers and the drivers of two wheelers and auto rickshaws, The buses halt at any places to take in passengers instead of at designated bus halts. The auto rick rickshaws have no speed limits. they overtake from any sides and drive at speeds exceeding speed limits. With regard to two wheelers it is a common sight to see them riding without helmets and carrying two passengers at a time.

It is time that law comes down heavily on these offenders and Mr. Shantharaju has indeed moved in the right direction.

The move of the Police to get pictures to their whatsapp is very good.

However, how much secreccy will be maintained by these police personnel.

    Merits :

People may not turn to violate traffic rules.
Motor cycle People will wear Helmets.
Four wheeler's will give proper light signals well in advance prior to take deviations.
Bus drivers may follow rightly if punished for violations.
There are many people driving in the opposite way / in the one road moving in the opposite.

    Demerits.:

Police may make money from the both complainer and the complained.
Will the police keep the complainer's mobile number secrecy is a question.

Sir the actual issue is not that of wearing helmets or seat belt, the actual issue is rash and reckless driving by most of the city bus and service bus even in the heart of the city which is dangerous to the commuters, pedestrians, two wheeler, auto rickshaw
etc why action cannot taken on those violators .

I totally agree with your comments sir.
The whole havoc in and around DK is created by city bus drivers. Can you kindly put a stop on those reckless drivers please. Educate the drivers or need to put a criteria of minimum education to become a driver.

No one asks about out station buses park at the bus stop near Milagres cross road and college buses entering the road from the church side (Mother Theresa Road side) when there is a board of no entry for heavy vehicles. The buses are professional college bus and out station bus. No one to question them.
It is so difficult for pedestrians mostly students the Police should look into it.

Very Good Move! Need of the hour so that this will reduce the accidents.
During my last visit I saw many such incidents of no Helmet, Triple ride... However my concern many times there was no registration number on these 2 wheelers.. For Registration etc was mentioned. I think police should not allow any vehicles in roads unless it has valid registration plate numbers...

    Dear DCP,
Good Move but one suggestion those who are sending violation photos please reward them. If you imposing Rs.500 fine reward with 50 or 100 that person. Then this move work effectively or else Public act like they dont have time to send photos.

If the bus nuisance of "sudden changing lanes, stopping in the middle of the road blocking traffic, racing on the streets, going slow and blocking the road" was taken care of the roads would be way more safe. But it's all about paying fines, isn't it?

Day by day traffic is increasing in city like Mangalore and Administration has to provide proper parking. Our administration did not have long term vision for growing cities and people in administration and. Planning are not qualified.
Make planned multi level paid parking for two wheelers and cars on busy roads of market,School, colleges, hospitals and Hampankatta with shops facing roadside which will generate revenue.
Fining the law breakers is good thing but more irritating is those who overtake in TRAFFIC JAMS from the right side blocking th incoming traffic (Hard shoulder). These violators should be fined heavily and should be barred from driving atleast for 6 months. They should be given community service like working in old age homes ,orphanages and hospitals as a punishment atleast for two months.
Provide chest (body) cameras to traffic police.

Initiative is good, but need not be restricted to two wheeler, helmet etc., The major problem is heavy vehicles like trucks, tankers, lorries and even trailers indiscriminately plying on the fast track. Some vehicles even don't have rare indicator lights. Its so dangerous and disturbing to other vehicles. These vehicles neither go at fast speed on the fast track nor give way to other vehicles to use the fast track. Concerned authorities....please look into this menace and educate those drivers to compulsorily to use the slow track if they are driving heavy vehicles. These are standard international traffic rules. To educate them you may need to levy heavy fines, cancel licences, or punish them legally.

Out of frustration, in an attempt to overtake such heavy vehicles from the wrong side other vehicles meet with unavoidable accidents.

Thank you and request Daijiworld to kindly pass on my request to concerned authorities.

What about rickshaw drivers refusing to ply passengers? This is the biggest problem in Mangalore. Either ban rickshaws completely or see that they comply.

Good initiative but why only sending photos of two wheel riders only? How about other traffic violators? People park their vehicles wherever they want. In some instants people park just in front of the board which says:

    NO PARKING
    <---- 200M ----->

This is a good initiative. Kindly have a check at the signals in PVS, Bendorewell, KSRTC. The signals don't seem to be utilised due to which there are chances of more accidents and reckless driving by few.
