Kundapur, Jun 8: In light of the recent incident wherein a pregnant woman in labour pain was refused ambulance facilities and treatment citing non-availability of doctors, the Karnataka Labour Forum led by its district president Ravi Shetty held a protest in front of Kundapur government hospital.

Kundapur taluk medical officer Dr Nagabhushan and chief medical officer in the hospital, Dr Udayashanker, announced that they would make sure such mistakes by the hospital staff would not repeat in the future. They also said that a report in this regard was sent to the district medical officer and disciplinary action would be taken against the guilty.

The protestors were not convinced and asked the doctor and the nurses be called at the protest site to hear their statement.

The doctor who arrived apologised and said that she worked despite till 11 pm despite being unwell that day, and that she left after submitting a report. "I apologise for the problems faced by the patient," she said.

Nurses were also summoned on spot and asked why they did not provide ambulance to the woman. The nurses in response said that the patient did not ask for the ambulance, which was why it was not provided. Those who were present at the protest were annoyed with the answer. At last the nurses admitted that what they did was wrong.

The protesters called off the protests after warning that violent demonstrations would be held in the future if suitable action was not taken against the guilty.

What happend at Kundapur Hospital was a disaster. A poor pregnant lady was turned away at midnight when she came with labour pains. She was asked to go to Udupi which is almost 30 kms away. The Doctor apologised here , But will an apology reverse what the poor lady suffered here? There were two Gynaecologists and if they must make sure some one else is available if they are taking leave. I feel this is a criminal offence on part of Hospital authorities. The lady was also denied transport by the Hopsital authorities. This is a unpardonable crime and the cuprits involved in this incident deserve no mercy whatsoever. Finally the layd had to depend on an autorikshaw which took them to a private hospital in the middle of night. Everyone know how expensive private hospitals are in Kundapur. I feel very sad when I read what this poor lady had to undergo. Luckily despite the gross negligence the lady and the baby are safe.
I feel the ladys medical expense at private hospital must be borne by the goverment. Secondaly the Doctors , nurses and other paramedical staff involved in this whole episode must be punished. Because no woman shoudl ever suffer like this again.
Recently there are attacks happenings against Doctors. I condemn the violence However sometimes I feel the rude and insensitive behavior on part of Medical staff sometimes make public react. Every human life is precious and Doctors and paramedical staff must handle such situations with care. No life should be neglected. I condemn the insensitive behavior on part of Hospital staff here.
In future the Hospital acuthorities must sure that some Gyanecologists is always available in the hospital. Its the duty of Hospital to make sure that ambulance is always is available in the Hospital. I wish no woman ever suffer like this again. There needs to be strict monitoring of Hospitals in Kundpaura area so that such incidences never happen again in the area.
All human beings must be treated with diginity and respect.
