Mangalore: Fr Archibald Gonsalves Elected Provincial of Carmelites

Mangalore, Apr 17: Fr Archibald Gonsalves, was elected the 7th Provincial of the Karnataka-Goa Province of the Discalced Carmelites during the X Provincial Chapter on Wednesday April 16.
Fr Archibald was born in Madanthyar near Beltangady on July 9, 1961. He joined the Carmelite Order after his PUC, in the year 1979. After his seminary studies at St Joseph’s Inter-diocesan Seminary he was ordained priest on June 5, 1989.
He obtained his Masters in Philosophy and Masters in English literature from the Karnataka University. After successfully completing his term of office as the ‘Dean’ of Pushpashrama, Institute of Philosophy, Mysore, he pursued his higher studies in Moral Theology in Rome. Besides a master’s degree in Bio-ethics from the Gemelli Institute, he has a Licentiate and a Doctorate in moral Theology from the Alfonsian Academy, Rome. He also served as the president of the “Indian Priests’ union” there.
After returning to India, he has been engaged in teaching Bio-Ethics and Moral Theology in various seminaries and institutes. He was elected first provincial councilor in the Provincial Chapter 2002 and also appointed as the director of Dhyanavana, Institute of Spirituality at Mysore. For the last three years, he was the rector of Pushpashrama, Institute of Philosophy in Mysore.
