Mangalore, Apr 29: “ Five decades ago, doctors were looked upon like Gods. Now they are treated as service providers. This is only because they are controlled by non-medical professionals and doctors have not taken leadership in society today. The day has come for all the doctors to be introspective. ” said N Vinay Hegde, chairman of Nitte Education Trust.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the super specialty block at K S Hegde Hospital Deralakatte on Tuesday, April 29, he said that, if Justice K S Hegde had not come to Nitte in the year 1979, nothing would have changed. What he had dreamed of , has bloomed into a large complex today. He said that Justice Hegde was a father figure to him.
Justice K S Hegde started a school in Nitte and a primary health centre for the villagers who were deprived of basic medical facilities. Now Nitte institution has grown into a mammoth institute giving education to over 10 thousand students in three campuses, he said.
The newly inaugurated super specialty block is largely meant for the middle class people. But sometimes the medical cost would be much beyond the reach of the commoner. Therefore, a corpus fund will be created for this purpose, he added.
Dr K R Shetty, cardio-vascular surgeon of Cumbala Hills Hospital of Mumbai, Dr Ajith Hegde of Methodist Hospital of Houston Texas, Dr Mahesh Ramchandani of Methodist Hospital of Houston Texas, Dr Satish Bhandary, Dr Chandrashekhar Shetty, Dr N V Adyantaya, Dr N R Shetty and Dr Arunachalam Kumar were present on the dais.
