Beltangady, May 6: The repair work on NH 48 on Shiradi Ghat section from Gundya to Sakleshpur is almost over and the stretch will be opened for traffic from June 1 onwards.
Addressing press persons here on Monday May 5, public works, ports and inland water transport department principal secretary Sudhir Krishna said that though the deadline for the repair works is March 15, 2009, the work is almost over and vehicles will be allowed to ply on the stretch.
The movement of heavy vehicles was banned for carrying out repair works on the section since December 2007. This caused a great inconvenience to people as they had to take a detour through Charmadi Ghat which increased the travelling time by four to five hours.
Krishna further informed that the remaining work pertained to concreting the curves and repairing drainage. Both works are scheduled to be completed by May end and the stretch will be opened on June 1, he said.
Of the 13 curves, eight have been completed while the rest will be done soon. About 250 metres of concreting work is pending. The repair work is being done at a cost of Rs 33 crore.
The asphalation of the road was done using bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete. The work includes repair of carriageway, asphalation, culvert construction, concreting and drainage repair.
