To prevent identity fraud, Govt makes Aadhaar must for death registration

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI): The government has made Aadhaar number mandatory for the registration of death from October 1, to prevent identity fraud.

The home ministry said on Friday that it would be applicable for the residents of all states except Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Meghalaya, for which a date would be notified separately.

"Aadhaar number will be required for the purpose of establishing the identity of the deceased for the purpose of death registration with effect from October 1," according to a notification issued by the home ministry.

The office of the Registrar General, which functions under the home ministry, said the use of Aadhaar will result in ensuring accuracy of the details provided by the relatives or dependents or acquaintances of the deceased.

"It will provide an effective method to prevent identity fraud. It will also help in recording the identity of the deceased person. Further, it will obviate the need for producing multiple documents to prove the identity of the deceased person," it said.

This is ridiculous. There are many reports that persons from other countries like Pakisthan and Bangladesh are having Aadhar card in their name. Today in Rajya Sabha minister for state for IT and Electronics P.P Chaudhary confirmed this also. This is apart from that numerous leaks of Aadhar card details in public. The present government is hell bent on implementation of Aadhar card for everything. One day this will lead to huge scam and other problems.

Its a good & foolish decision,
If the deceased was bedridden & he was unable to give his biometrics then he isn't dead for the government, but dead according to medical parameters.
The government is going from pillar to post to impress the voters that it is doing something to prevent misuse of death certificate, the percentage of the same may not be even 1% & to prevent it is a big achievement it seems for the present government by denying genuine cases of death of people without an Aadhaar, is this the same PM who had opposed it when he was CM?

How will they validate using fingerprints? Take the dead body to City Corporation?

If no fingerprints, then what stops anyone from using a person's aadhar (lost or stolen maybe) and declaring him dead.

Did they say anything about validation?
previously we had to give some identity proof for the dead person , if you want the death certificate,/also to use the crematorium.
Now you have to submit aadhar.
