Mangaluru, Jul 13: In a major leap forward for advanced healthcare in the region, Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) has successfully performed its first-ever robot-assisted total knee replacement surgery at the Father Muller Medical College Hospital in Kankanady on Monday, July 13. The landmark procedure was performed using the MAKO SmartRobotic system by Stryker, USA, marking a new era of high-precision orthopaedic care for patients in coastal Karnataka.
The cutting-edge surgery was performed by Dr Prashant Acharya and a dedicated team of expert orthopaedic surgeons and anaesthetists. The patient, who had been suffering from advanced, debilitating knee arthritis, is reported to be recovering rapidly and was able to stand and initiate assisted mobility shortly after the procedure.

Unlike conventional surgery, the robotic-assisted system allows surgeons to map the patient's unique joint anatomy in real-time. This translates into sub-millimeter precision when positioning the implant, optimal structural alignment, and significantly less trauma to the surrounding healthy tissues.
Speaking on the milestone, the hospital administration noted that adopting this state-of-the-art robotic technology aligns with Father Muller's core mission of bringing world-class, affordable medical innovations to the public. Medical experts highlight that patients undergoing robotic knee replacements typically experience substantially lower post-operative pain, minimal blood loss, and a much faster transition back to normal daily activities.
With the successful completion of this inaugural procedure, the hospital has officially integrated robotic arthroplasty into its regular orthopaedic services, making advanced joint reconstruction easily accessible to the local community.
