200 migrants breach Spain-Morocco border

Madrid, Aug 7 (IANS): Around 200 migrants managed to breach the border fence that separates Morocco from Spain, security forces said on Monday.

Border guards were deployed along the fence after warnings were issued that a mass breach attempt could take place, but they were taken by surprise when at 6 a.m. (local time) the migrants managed to cross the official checkpoint in the region of Ceuta, reports Efe news.

Although official figures are yet to be made available by the immigration office, it is estimated that around 200 people formed part of the group that managed to enter Spain's North African enclave.

A week ago, following a period of relative calm since February, some 73 migrants breached the border fence, while guards managed to prevent another group of 300 persons who were preparing to enter the Spanish territory.
