Udupi: Plastic rice found at fair price shop - action committee complains to DC

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Aug 8: After the media brought out a report about supply of 'plastic rice' by a fair price shop at Hejamady in the district, some customers visited this shop, and confirmed that the shop has indeed been providing plastic rice to the ration card holders. After getting confirmation, Citizens Action Committee of Hejamady has sent a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of the district, seeking stringent action.

Grains of plastic were found in 250 bags of rice supplied by government under 'Anna Bhagya' scheme to Hejamady branch of Padubidri Agricultural Cooperative Society. The government in the past had promised to handle the menace of plastic rice with iron hand. Through the memorandum submitted now, the committee has urged the deputy commissioner to hold departmental inquiry into the continuance of this menace in spite of the government's assurance, and take imperative steps to make sure that this type of rice is not supplied to any of the fair price shops in the state.

President of Citizens Action Committee Hejamady, Shekhar Hejamady, and some villagers from Hejamady visited the office of the deputy commissioner in the city on Monday and handed over the memorandum. Shekhar Hejamady said that the deputy commissioner of the district, Priyanka Mary Francis, immediately passed order asking food and civil supplies department to hold proper investigation and file a report thereof.

Shekhar Hejamady said that the authorities concerned have already passed an order against distribution of the rice bags containing contaminated rice. He said he would be sending a copy of the memorandum to food and civil supplies department minister, U T Khader, urging him to hold investigation and bring out the truth about people who mix plastic granules in rice. He warned of organizing strong fight against the system if the needful is not done and the guilty are not acted against.

Former president of Udupi zilla panchayat, Katapadi Shankar Poojary, asked the state government, which had claimed that the allegation about plastic rice was false, after holding discussions about the subject in the assembly, to wake up to the seriousness of the issue. He noted that media reports in the past had warned about plastic rice being supplied for 'Anna Bhagya' scheme from Chattisgarh state. He asked the government to identify the middlemen who have been involved with the supply of contaminated rice to districts in Karnataka, which threatens to play havoc with the health and lives of the people here, by holding a detailed department inquiry.

Food adulteration is a crime against humanity. In 2009, two persons were executed in China for tainting milk powder with melamine, an industrial chemical. Two years before that, China executed head of Food and Drug administration for accepting bribes to allow untested drugs to be approved for marketing. Adulteration of food which was unheard in past has now become a way of life.

“This dangerous malpractice is responsible for rise in cancers and deaths in India. The inordinate delay in disposal of court cases has become a tool for perpetrators to wriggle out the legal proceedings.

If India don't deter the food adulteration like Chinese death penalty, the billion plus population of India will be in serious health risk when India spends one lowest budget for its health sector.

if this rice is made in china ...how it is possible for it to clear the border customs and land in india ..without nationalist Govt employees involved in this scam ..Govt will say boycott chinese products , but they dont understand that a indian trader would have paid customs charges and full payment to chinese company and imported the goods and only a indian will suffer . Govt clearly says they cant ban chinese products coz its against WTO . now govt is indirectly saying punish indians who import chinese products and improve GDP of india by boycotting their products ...inshort kill a indian in the name of nationalism to take revenge on china . whereas chinese will be laughing at stupidity of indians who go around breaking OPPO mobile showrooms and upload the vedios from another chinese phone ...fekuism at its best ..

Here are the few simple test to check your rice if it's made of plastic.
These are extracted from the internet.

    Boiling test
The simplest way is to observe the rice. If it ends up forming a thick layer at the top of your container, it’s plastic.

    Water test
Drop a glass of raw rice inside a glass of water and stir it. If it surfaces it's plastic, as real rice cannot float.

    Fire test
Burn a handful of rice with a lighter to see if it smells anything like burning plastic.

    Hot oil test
Drop some rice into a pan with extremely hot oil (at least around 200 degrees). Plastic rice will melt and form a sticky layer at the bottom.

    Fungus test
Put some of your boiled rice in a container and leave it there for 3 days. If you do not see fungus or mould in it by then it could very well be plastic

There should be quality control check of all items instead of blaming the system now. We know that corruption is taking place at all levels and it is very difficult to eradicate.
