Karkala: Two workers crushed to death in quarry accident at Hebri

Karkala, Aug 12: In a tragic incident, two persons died on the spot in a quarry accident at Hebri here on Saturday August 12.

The deceased have been identified as Sanjeeva (35), who was working as a driver in the quarry, and Jagadish (43), a native of Uttar Pradesh, who was working as a loader.

The quarry belongs to Prasanna Sooda and is located at Shivapura, Kalmunda in Hebri.

It is learnt that a lorry had just finished loading gravel stones into a bunker for crushing. While taking reverse, the lorry dashed into the bunker, which then toppled on Sanjeeva and Jagadish.

The two were crushed under the weight of the stones and met instant death. Their bodies were trapped in the debris and even after fours of the operation, they have not been retrieved.

Locals and rescue teams are trying to clear the debris and retrieve the bodies.

Hebri police and Karkala circle inspector Jagannath arrived at the spot.

The locals had previously opposed the operation of the quarry in the area, and had even approached the Lokayukta, which had conducted investigations.
