Protests continue over Dalit girl's death; DMK vows to continue fight against NEET

Chennai, Sep 3 (PTI): Protests continued for the second day today here over the death of a Dalit medical aspirant and a petitioner in the Supreme Court against the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET).

Activists of a pro-Tamil outfit, 'May 17 Movement' were detained when they attempted to lay siege to the BJP's state headquarters here, police said.

The protesters raised slogans against the Central and state governments over the suicide of 17-year-old Anitha from Ariyalur, daughter of a daily wage earner who allegedly hanged herself at her house in Ariyalur district on Sept 1 reportedly upset over not getting an MBBS seat.

Security has been beefed up at the BJP office here.

Pro-Dalit Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) also staged protests here and scores of its volunteers were detained.

Anitha was reportedly upset after it became known that Tamil Nadu will not be exempted from the ambit of National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET). She had earlier moved the Supreme Court against NEET.

Opposition DMK also targeted BJP and the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, faulting both for failing to ensure at least one year exemption for the state from NEET.

DMK Working President M K Stalin, who late last night paid tributes to Anitha at her native village shortly ahead of the cremation, said his party had donated Rs 10 lakh to her family.

NEET had affected social justice in Tamil Nadu, Stalin, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, claimed and assured his party will take the fight against NEET forward.

"DMK will align with like-minded forces to uphold the key Dravidian policy of social justice, retrieve the rights of the state, bring Education under the State List and ensure nobody else suffers Anitha's fate in Tamil Nadu," he said in a letter addressed to his partymen.

The BJP lashed out against those doing "brutal politics" over the teen's suicide. The BJP state President Tamilisai Sounderrajan also took objection to the "insult" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue.

"Insulting Prime Minister Modi cannot be accepted," she said in a brief statement, apparently referring to effigies of the PM being burnt by protestors at Coimbatore yesterday.

The BJP is a party of Traders and Bussinessmen. They do not care for the common man or the marginalised sections of our society like the farmers, Backward Classes and Dalits.

Classical case of commenting without knowing anything. NEET was first conducted in 2012 much before BJP govt came to power. Without NEET all you will get is capitation fees seats and I am not sure how that helps backward classes.

NEET is for the entire country and there is reservation as is the case with all other institutions. So why special status only for Tamilnadu. When students from all states have no problem why Tamilmnadu should have problem. And when it comes to coaching and taking special classes it applies to CET, COMED K, IIT/JEE, Banking and even UPSC including IAS. But no one complained till now. Then why find fault with the govt now. Better find a suitable subject to vomit the frustration.

Only rich people paying and taking training for NEET in different coaching centers. What about the poor ? Only the strong survive, and the weak must die.

    Dear Henry,
NEET is the only way poor people will get into medical college. It is absolutely essential to curb the capitation fee mafia. Without NEET medical seats are sold in black market for crores. Tell me how a poor man can buy this seat? NEET ensures that there is importance given to merit. As regards coaching centres that is the same for any exam. Coaching centre give coaching for PUC exams too, so what you want to do, abolish PUC exams as well ? What about IIT exams, there are coaching centres for that as well . Do you want to cancel IIT-JEE as well? These people who are protesting in name of Dalit girl are only doing politics and who knows which private medical college lobby is behind them.

NEET should have been implemented gradually.Even coaching centres weren't all that ready.By the next 2years students would be well prepared for NEET.Till then board marks should have been given weightage along with NEET score. That's the issue.Don't be under the impression that NEET is the ultimate cure.Medical seats are being sold at crores for the barely qualified rich candidates.Nothing has changed much.Maybe deserving candidates are little more this year..just about 20% & pay moderate fees.Rest 50% seats in deemed Universities will still sell for crores. It's only obvious it happens as most politicians own med.colleges & they won't let them sink.
