Mangalore: Nitte Group of Educational Institutions Get Deemed University Status

Mangalore, Jun 5: Nitte University has been formed and recognised as a deemed university under section 3 of UGC Act 1956 vide University Grants Commission(UGC) notification No. F. 9-13/2007-U.3(A) dated June 4, 2008. The first constituent college of the University will be the A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. N Vinaya Hegde, president of Nitte Education Trust, will be the chancellor of this new niversity while Dr Shantharam Shetty, former Dean of K S Hegde Medical Academy will be the first vice-chancellor.
Nitte Education Trust was formed in the year 1979, under the leadership of Justice K S Hegde to provide basic education, health care and to train manpower. The trust established a high school at Nitte in 1979. Later this trust never turned back, opening new colleges and educational institutions regularly.
Nitte Education Trust manages medical, dental and four paramedical colleges, a 600-bed specialty hospital, two engineering colleges, two MBA institutions, two MCA institutions, a college of hotel management, two technical training institutions, two first grade colleges, two pre-university colleges, five schools and a three star hotel. About ten thousand students study in various institutes of the trust and about 3500 personnel serve in all the 23 institutions. The trust has a medical sciences complex at Deralakatte and two campuses, one each at Nitte and Bangalore.
