Accept noteban blunder, rebuild economy: Manmohan to Modi

New Delhi, Nov 7 (DHNS): Time for politicking on demonetisation is over and it is time Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledges the blunder and seeks support from all to rebuild the economy, former prime minister Manmohan Singh has said.

In an interview to BloombergQuint, Singh described demonetisation as a "catastrophic economic policy" that may exacerbate inequalities which can be harder to rectify in the future.

"In such a diverse country such as ours, inequality can prove to be a far greater social malaise than in other homogeneous nations," he said.

Singh termed the objectives of less cash or digital economy as "laudable pursuits", but added that it was "unclear" whether it would indeed help small enterprises become larger and achieve scale efficiencies.

"It is time the prime minister graciously acknowledges the blunder and seeks support from all to rebuild our economy," Singh said.

"There comes certain moments in a democracy's history when economics should take precedence over politics. It is one such moment now in India," the former prime minister said.

On the government's efforts to formalise the informal economy through initiatives such as the GST, Singh said that any move to widen the tax base should be welcomed but warned that in its current form, GST threatens to derail the informal sector entirely.

Singh, a former RBI governor, said demonetisation was also an attack on the independence and credibility of RBI as an institution.

The former prime minister termed jobless and unequal economic growth as biggest twin challenges before the nation.

"There are also no easy solutions to these challenges. At the very least, we must ensure we do not exacerbate these challenges through self-inflicted wounds such as demonetisation," Singh said.

    successful - GST
    decisive - Demonetization
nationalist - gate crash birthday party attendance
courageous - surgical strike (by Army but imagine who claims credit)
hardworking - certainly, that is why surpassed foreign trip numbers of all ex-PMs

You did not take credit for bringing in black money and foreign countries reps standing in queue in Delhi anticipating their turn for 'Make in India'

Amazing how this person who pretended to be mute and blind to all Congress scams while he was PM has re-found his voice only after leaving office. . By allowing series of scams worth lakhs of crores of rupees to take place right under his nose and allowing such a big economy to be predominantly cash dependent and informal and opaque which destroyed the economy of this country, he has lost the moral right to criticize the present Govt. Lets be fair.

Dr. Manmohan Singh is a man of few words. He doesn't talk much, but when he speaks he speaks sense and the truth. I clear remember his warning about three years back when he had predicted that if Mr. Modi was elected to power, that would prove disastrous to the country. Can anybody say with conviction that it was a wrong prediction? Dr. Mamnohan Singh might have failed as a P.M. That is because he is not a politician and he was made use of by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. But as an economist as Finance Minister, he has proved beyond doubt how well endowed he is. He towers above everybody else when it comes to managing Finance. To even mention Mr. Modi's name in the same breath as Dr. Singh's would be incongruous. You can't compare daylight with darkness. Mr. Modi is an expert in delivering speeches as he has the gift of the gab but when it comes to managing the economy, he is just no match for Dr. Singh. Let's be fair and accept the facts. It now appears fairly clear that Mr. Modi has made a mess of the economy. Let him accept this truth and have a frank discussion with Dr. Manmohan Singh and Dr. Raghuram Rajan and may be Mr. Pranab Mukherjee. I am sure they will guide him so that the country can come out of this rut it has been pushed into by this incompetent BJP government.

Leave everything to BJP to reverse the bad impact, revise the economic disaster etc. They want to be in power beyond 2019 and it is their duty to prove what went wrong and explain to people the benefits being provided to common man. Speeches are only heard but practical difficulties are felt in day to day life or in small scale business environment
NDTV in morning news today, heighlighted or exposed some facts and figures how far demonetization helped in checking, black money, counterfiet notes and cross boarder terrorism. But Modi's version is entirely different.

Its funny that BJP leadership and the feku bhakth ghan, wants Dr. MMS to accept all scams.

This shows how incompetent BJP is. They are in power, they came to power claiming congress looted the country, they were supposed to seize all the looted money. 3Years and counting, nothing happened yet.

Maybe the CBI, IT, ED, Police, ATS and intelligence, could be trying to peep more on Architects, rather than these corruption cases.

    Manoj Shetty,

Modi during his election campaign in 2014, said the same thing that you have said here. People believed him and voted for him. Result is in front of you, the situation is going backwards, not forward.

People have lost jobs instead of new jobs availability, property prices are crumbling instead of rising, apartments are vacant more than occupied, fuel and commodities have gone higher than lower. Communities clash more than peaceful existing, farmers continue to commit suicide and our soldiers slain more in numbers than they have been before this. Above all, contrary to finding black money abroad, it exists right within the nation.

Tell me, how are years post 2014 better than the past 60 years ? We have just 3 and half years as example, even a thought of future years under present administration is dreading.

    Mahesh,

I have a small excerpt that I found somewhere :
    Quote
Since Modi came to power, Ramdev's company has received more than an estimated $46 million in discounts for land acquisitions in states controlled by the BJP, according to a Reuters review of state government documents, interviews with officials and real estate estimates. It gained access to other land free of charge.
    Unquote

Tell me - is this similar to or higher than what has been happening in the country before 2014 ? The example is about just one organization. I've not gone into matters related to many more individuals benefited during past three years.

Its left up to you to accept or leave that the scams do continue despite Congress does not rule the country since 2014.

    Dear Mr. PM . Modi.

As a citizen of the great country my piece of advice to you.
Our Nation, Economy should come above any party line or politics.
As a Nation we all Indians and are ONE.
    Mistakes does happens.
Accepting the mistakes in the interest of nation becomes greater than your personal pride.
Even Indira Ghandhi accepted her mistake of 'emergency' openly.
Patriotism we must learn from Dr. Monmohan Singh who is coming out above partylinie and not politics.

Let RBI play its role and not your role on them.
