Bengaluru: BBC praises 'Indira Canteen' project of state government, calls it admirable

Daiji Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Nov 21: International broadcaster, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has lauded the ambitious 'Indira Canteen' project, that is started by the state government in order to feed the hunger of poor people.

Geetha Pandey, BBC reporter, who had been to Bengaluru tasted the food at Indira canteen at K R Market and has published a report, in which she says, "Earlier I had eaten in the 'Amma Canteen' in Tamilnadu. The food there was good. However, the food at Indira canteen is still better." This report has gone viral on social sites.

Geetha Pandey

The report analyses, "Poor people including daily wage labourers, drivers, security personnel and beggars are buying food from Indira canteen. The step taken by the state government in providing food at cheap price is really admirable. Snacks are available for only Rs 5 and people who used to spend Rs 30, are saving Rs 25 now. People with meagre income, who used to spend Rs 140 for three meals a day, are spending only Rs 40 and thereby saving Rs 100 per day. Financial situation of the poor and downtrodden will definitely improve because of this."

Chief minister Siddaramaiah has shared this report on his official Tweeter account.

It is disheartening to read some of the comments criticizing the subsidized food at India Canteen. Some intellectual mentioned that it is against the wage competition and work ethics because people get lazy after eating meals subsidized with tax payers’ money. Some say it is a gimmick to get people vote for the ruling party. You call them lazy. Are you sure that they are going to go to the polling booth on Election Day?
    Let’s not buy that logic:
Let’s look at the story of loan sharks, who led flamboyant life styles with tax payers’ money to the tune of billions. Let’s imagine the amount of subsidized diesel was used to transport more than one lakh truckloads of iron ore from Bellary to Mangalore. Let’s think about all that subsidized diesel went into rich man’s Mercedes Benz over the years. Let’s not forget the subsidy received by the small business enterprises. Haven’t we seen rich people getting treatment at the Govt. hospitals often by befriending good doctors and availing special treatment at free of cost? Let’s also not forget the legislators eating subsidized meal in their own canteens. Is it ethical? Will they become lazy?
Why our mind-set is different when it comes to feeding poor, needy and hungry with the subsidized meal? Indira Canteen is not for beggars, but for working poor who toil whole day to make ends meet. (Beggars earn in lakhs and donate money to temples, even though begging is illegal). Well, we make big hue and cry about tax payers money. Let’s do the soul search and calculate how much tax we have avoided paying to the exchequer over the past years!!!
Let’s uplift these poor and needy people in whatever way possible. They are the backbone of our economy. A well fed man can be very productive. Finally, let’s think out of the box.

In UK , Norway once you retire from work government takes care of needy people . They give them facilities to stay or serve food or medical purposes . Hardened Money paid by public is used in serving needy .This is called gods act. Here in Karnataka money is spent feeding people in canteens with hardened money of tax payers.. In mangalore Good christian institutions serve the needy which is gods act but government does not help or care the needy here Government has no interest towards needy here. . Morever we are calling feeding Lazy a Gods Act !!!!!!!!!!!! Another thing its very interesting to know how BBC staff involved here. Worth asking BBC itself .

Tamil Nadu is the best example of subsidizing everything as a result of which funds for precious projects to provide basic facilities are missing.
Subsidizing poor through PDS ration, support for education, skillset development, etc should be considered.
Indira canteen facilities are more often leveraged by well to do. It is merely a vote gathering exercise, which also provides indirect means of funneling state money to coffers of the ruling junta.
Indira Canteen should scrapped immediately to provide semblance of competitiveness in wages, work ethic.

Subsidized meals to poor is right thing to do, no matter who does it. In a developing country like India, no one should go hungry. Govt. need to open up more Indira canteens and see that good quality food is served with hygiene.

BBC appreciating the scheme does not mean anything . Helping Poor is definitely a noble cause and we must all help real poor but Feeding Lazy people with poor peoples Tax money is not noble cause at all ! . Selective helping of poor people through good schemes fetches less votes to politicians compared to feeding all people through these canteens . Feeding all (majority maynot be poor) fetches lumpsum votes . With no real progress in state and people dieing due to rain and corruption all around state government with the fear of losing is looking for cheap schemes that will quickly earn votes without much efforts . Since governments motives are quite obvious i do not think people will fall to these tactics and likely to benefit other parties. If Government introduced these schemes along with steady progress of state that would have been a another matter to discuss but i am afraid here the motive is as clear as mirror . Morever by such vote catching schemes you are burdening the state progress and poor people in the state and theres no money left to feed the real poor or to repair roads or repair pat holes as all money is going feeding lazy . I request government to use lot of money to help real poorthrough good schemes rather than wasting money in this way .Not a sign of progressive administraton

cheaper food facility , cheaper hospital treatment /medical facility, cheaper transport, cheaper electricity, cheaper housing ,cheaper education makes wonders in developing countireis like india.
in india 30 to 40% people are poor and middle class .karnataka 's developments are excellent compared to other states. that may be hard work of current govt.all states should take this type of developments.

Giving subsidized food is a good deed. But the people who eat at Indira Canteens are the typical Auto drivers, bus conductors and Bus crew, Garage workers and not to mention hundreds of Congress supporters- typically the kinda people who earn extra bucks every day in some kind or other.

The category which needs to eat from here - Beggars, destitute s and street urchins are shooed away from here by the canteen crew. Also main point to be noted is that there is no cooking happening here, its a food dispensing point. These pointers the current Govt should look into on a war footing to correct the requirement of cheap subsidized food.

Very Good to hear that, Siddaramaiah should continue his run as CM of Karnataka for another term. Among the A Listed Candidates in CM run across all the parties in Karnataka, Siddaramaiah is the best. . . We had a good tenure of past 4 Years. It's a very goo deed, Amma Canteen as well as Indira Canteen. Helping the Poor. . .
