Riyadh, Nov 26: Konkan Ghar Riyadh (KGR) successfully held its fifth annual sports meet - 2017 in Riyadh recently.The sports day started early morning with the preliminary rounds of volleyball and throw ball matches played amongst the four houses; Blue house, Green house, Red house and Yellow house.
On completion of the preliminary rounds, KGR 2017 annual sports day inaugural ceremony kicked off. Sunitha Menezes Miyar and Nita Vas Omzoor compered the inaugural ceremony and elucidated the purpose of the sports meet to the gathered sports lovers. Ivan Vas Omzoor, KGR president welcomed.
The sports event was inaugurated with the very age old tradition of lighting the ceremonious lamp. The 1st wick was lit by KGR Gurkar Eric D’sa and KGR president, Ivan Vas. The second wick was lit by sport secretaries Manoj Aranha and Neetha Vas. The third wick was lit by Kevin Nazareth and Bhaskar Poojari, 4th wick by Barsa President Santosh Shetty and KWAR general secretary Nelson D’Souza, 5th wick lit by JPG leader Ravi Castelino and OLPS leader Sunitha Menezes.
Savitha Aranha Shirva, led the gathering into prayer befitting the occasion. Sports meet oath was recited by Royston Prabhu. KGR Gurkar, Eric D’sa Pangla, expressed his appreciation to all members and sponsors for their support and attendance in large numbers on the day. He invited all the participants to take part in the events with the ethos of true sportsmanship. He stressed the purpose of having such gatherings regularly to unite the community members that would ignite unity and strong bonding among the community members.
The classic sports parade led by the captains of the four houses; Manoj Aranha Shirva of Blue team, Alwyn D’Souza Niddodi of Green team, Kiran Machado Kayyar of Red team and Austin Menezes Miyar of Yellow team with their respective team members to the march-fast beat added colour to the sport meet. Sports meet hit the ground with a chain of games.
Children up to first standard took part in 'Bead in the Ring Race and throwing the ball into the bucket' games. 'Kick the ball between the stumps and Frog Race' was conducted for children of age group studying in 2nd to 4th Std.
While children of age group studying in 5th to 7th Std took park in 'Lemon and spoon race', children of age group studying in 8th to 10th Std participated in 'Sack race'.
100 meter race was conducted for children of age groups studying in 1st to 4th Std, 5th to 7th Std and 8th to 10th Std for boys and girls separately.
Gents and ladies below 40 years of age and above 40 years of age took part in 100 meter race, shot put throw drew attention and applause from the crowd.
Amitha Royston Prabhu Bejai kept the children busy by conducting a variety of outdoor games and winners were awarded with prizes.
Late evening, it was the dual finale of ladies throw ball match between Blue house and Red house, and men's volleyball match between blue house and yellow house, that evoked great interest and enthusiasm among the crowd and made the spectators to be on their toes cheering their respective teams. While the throw ball champions trophy was grabbed by Blue house, volleyball champions trophy was again clinched by blue team.
Six members from each team put their all might for Tug of War. Two teamed up against each other and in the finale it was Blue team who won and Red team was the runner up.
During the sports presentation and valedictory ceremony; first, second and third place winners, both, in the individual as well as group category, were invited to the victory stand and were felicitated with gold, silver and bronze medals and bouquets.
The house championship was won by Blue house with 98 points while the first runner up was secured by Red house with 79 points. Green house and Yellow house finished their point tally with 68 and 57 points respectively. Championship Trophy and the first runner up trophy was presented to respective team captains along with their team as the gathered crowd applauded the win teams.
Registration counter at the event was well organized by Victor Menezes Thottam, Micheal D’Souza Mudrangadi and Nelson D’Souza kinnigoli.
The scorer Alwyn D'Souza Niddodi did an excellent job by keeping track of the score and coordinated on the ground sports activities. Royston Prabhu Bejai, Thomas Fernandes Borivali with his live commentary added spark to the sports meet. To enhance sporting spirit there was sensational and lively music in the background and sound system was provided by Rahamatullah Khan.
To satisfy the appetite, very delicious breakfast, snacks, tea, soft drinks, and sumptuous lunch was catered to all the members.
Kevin Nazareth and family Thottam, Remy Lobo Deralakatte, Bhaskar Poojary Karkal, Vincent Sequeira Belthangady, Naveen Nazareth Thottam, Alwyn Rodrigues Shirva, Royston/Amitha Prabhu Bejai, Ivan Vas Omzoor, Nelson Dsouza Kinnigoli and Gerry Dsouza Mudarangadi were the sponsors of the KGR sports day 2017. Savita Aranha Shirva, proposed the vote of thanks during the sports presentation and valedictory ceremony. All the members participated in the sports and enjoyed every moment without considering the age limit. All in all, there was plenty of excitement and competition in the air throughout the day as the participants of all age groups took part in various events.
