Mysuru: Archbishop from Gujarat has unquestionable freedom of expression - Deve Gowda

Daijiworld Media Network - Mysuru (SP)

Mysuru, Nov 26: Former Prime Minister, H D Deve Gowda, criticized the way in which Pejawar Swamiji raised the topic relating to a letter written by a Archbishop from Gujarat to churches there seeking their support for a secular political party. The issue had been raised at the Dharma Sansad at Udupi by the Swamiji.

Expressing surprise that this topic was taken up for serious discussion thereafter, Gowda wondered whether the Archbishop does not enjoy the freedom of expression. Gowda insisted that personal views can be expressed by anyone, a right which is guaranteed as per the country's constitution.

He felt that it would be difficult for Kannada Sahitya Parishat to function without politics as politics has seeped into everything. He insisted that religious beliefs should be allowed to the personal choice of individuals.

Speaking at the 83rd All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan here on Saturday November 25 after honouring achievers from various fields, Deve Gowda asked organizations to continue with their fight for issues like Kannada language, sharing of Cauvery river water, Mahadayi issue etc. He urged the activists to always ensure that the protests remain non-violent.

What Mr. Gowda has said is 100% correct.
Thanks for your support for the exercise of freedom of expression by the citizens of India. Dear friends irrespective of party affiliation support the right cause which promotes the rights of Indian citizens.

Voting to a secular party is the right thing to do and why the EC is issuing notice to the Archbishop? It is obvious that some party is not secular and that party is unqualified to stand for the election. Is it secular thing to appoint a religious Swamy as Chief Minister? Where were the EC? I want Archbishop to run for the election and become CM or PM.

If you have to open a bank account, you have to fill the application form which asks for your religion. If you leave it blank the manager will fill it for you as she/he says it's.mandatory.

If religion can be removed from the official forms, secularism begins. Untill that happens, minorities will have to get reservation as they face a sense of discrimination only they understand. As long as the dalits are discriminated against, there should be reservations for them.

The fact that archbishop is singled out by election commission makes a strong case of bias against minorities. The sitting MP issues fatwa against Deepika Padukone. Any action taken?

Rightly said. All forms should eliminate the asking of question " Religion" which is the cause for all trouble. Religion is personal. Let it be separate. ArchBishop has putforth his feelings and advised. Whats wrong?? You take it or leave it. what difference?? Only an Indian will be elected know at last?? Looking at the letter, no one will vote for Chinese man right?? Among the Indians, we choose the best. So What fuss the EC has to make?? Lets come out of the paradigm and accept all as Indians. Let us move forward and work to save the greatest democracy of the world...

It would be better if this swamiji had requested our prime minister to change the constitution given in articles 19, 20, 21 and 22, with the view of guaranteeing individual rights that leads to freedom of speech !! then he can make such statements on those people who enjoy their freedom of speech. I give my full support to Archbishop who has requested people to vote for the right party! #Peacebewithyouall

Every Indian has the constitutional rights and the Arch. Bishop is within his rights to express his opinion and request the faithful to support or not to support any particular party. Baba Ramdev, Shree Shree, other sages openly supporting a particular party is acceptable. Yogi Adithyanath representing a political party and becoming the chief minister of U.P. is acceptable. Then how come an Arch Bishop giving an opinion is not acceptable??

There can not be two standards. We fully endorse and support the Arch Bishop.

Civil liberties are enshrined in the constitution to every citizen under democracy.
Baba Ramdev, Sri Sri, Dhama Sansad, KP Bhat, Praveen Togadia and so many others solicited votes to their favorite political party!
In such case, they also shouldn't have been allowed to influence voters.
If their propagation was not objectionable, why there is so much hue and cry when Bishop expressed his opinion for voting certain ideology? He didn't even used any party's name!
Are they not trying to curb freedom of expression?

..Indians should give importance to Nationalism/Patriotism, kids should be made aware of 'Nation first' from early stage..lack of Nationalism will divide Nation , if nation fails then the so called freedom of speech, press, freedom of practice of religion everything will fail & vanish....look at ME..Christians are there since pre-islamic era..where are they now..IRAQ/EGYPT/SYRIA, once thriving with Christians..If sects are united with Nationalism, countries would have survived..Nation gone, everything gone..few left in LEBANON..mark my word, days are not far..whats happening now in LEBANON may become final nail to minorities in ME..INDIA being a Hindu majority country, dozens of religion flourished, spread without prosecution for hundreds year..do we need speech on secularism, we practiced it before British/Europeans coined the word..if Govts/courts push majorities to follow fake secularism & do partiality then we may also fail like others..

Dear Mr. Prashant Karkera, Hejamady/Mumbai - do not jump into conclusions without first reading and understanding the letter. The letter nowhere says "BJP". It only says to avoid voting communal and polarizing political parties which is an all time truth for the safety of any democracy.

Whenever reference of communal party by any minority leader targets only right wing parties, no need to mention any particular party name, this is general perception. Polarising political party could be congress also, they joined hands with Patidhar Andolan's Hardik Patel in Gujarat, is not this caste based politics

how come a religious leader like the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Gandhinagar appeal Christians of Gujarat to vote against a particular party, does he not aware of supreme court's seven-judge Constitution Bench's verdict, it says "The relationship between man and God and the means which humans adopt to connect with the almighty are matters of individual preferences and choices, seeking votes in the name of religion, caste, race, community or language is not acceptable".
Election commission has already sent him a notice to explain his stand, the same incident happened before 2014 general elections, when Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid, Delhi appealed muslims to vote for Congress soon after his meeting with Smt. Sonia Gandhi

That is why civilised soceity has constitution, court. People progress towards a civilised soceity, sadly we are hell bent on walking away from one. Future generations will read about our folly. All this ultra nationalism is taking us to destruction, how soon, it is in the hands of dharma sansad.
