Mangaluru: Smart City - People of Manjalkatte complain of polluted water supply

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 19: Experts have said that water from the tubewell at Manjalkatte, Nandanapura in Kavoor is polluted. But this water continues to be supplied to Manjalkatte area. There is also complaint that because of not repairing the water pipe supplying water to this area since several years, large quantities of water gets wasted.

Locals say that there has not been any improvement even after complaints were made to local administration and corporator concerned. The corporation has been urging people not to waste water. It also claims to be laying added emphasis on hygiene, cleanliness and health of the people. But these claims have turned hollow here.

The borewell at Nandanapura had been dug two years ago when the city went through water shortage. As this borewell is giving out enough water, this water is being supplied to people. However, in course of time, change in colour of water was noticed and it also emitted bad odour. The experts at Fisheries College who tested the water certified that this water was not potable and people consuming this water run the risk of facing health problems. Thereafter, supply of this water had been stopped. However, allegations have surfaced, claiming that this water is again being supplied now. It is said that the water is getting polluted as water from underground drainage gets mixed with it.

The water pipeline crossing from near Manjalkatte Daivasthana had developed cracks long back. After complaining, it is being repaired temporarily now and then, and the problem persists, with water gushing out of this pipe all through the year. The mud road, as a result, has become slushy field because of this. As the pit dug for repeated repairs has not been filled, it invites danger. The demand for concreting this road has not been met till now. Locals say tippers carrying earth have been inflicting damage to the road.

Mumbai and Mangaluru , they call smart cities. The dirt is increasing and other facilities are crumbling. Still. we agree that they are smart cities.

I think smart city is just like the form of insurance policy. We read terms and condition, but never understand anything. Still, we mark "I agree".
