Country being divided, losing faith in govt: Catholic body

New Delhi, Dec 22 (Indian Express): Stating that the “country is being polarised due to religious affiliations”, the top Catholic body in the country has said the community is “losing confidence” in the government. “From the point of Christian community, this whole incident of attack on priests and seminaries in Satna and the state government’s move to file cases against the priests, arresting the poor and the innocent instead of finding the culprits, do not help us to keep our confidence in the government intact. We are losing our confidence in the government,” Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), the apex decision making body of the Catholic Church in the country, told The Indian Express in an interview.

“I agree such incidents can happen in a big country… But how do you evaluate the strength and stand of the government? It is the subsequent action and the legal protection are what matter.”

“The country is being divided on the basis of religious belief. It is bad in a democratic country. I want my country to be united in a secular fabric. But now, this country is being polarised due to religious affiliations. We should fight against it,” the Cardinal said.

Last week, 30 priests and seminarians singing carols in a village near Satna in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh were detained by police after Bajrang Dal activists accused them of trying to forcibly convert the villagers. One of the priests was arrested under the state’s draconian anti-conversion law.

Cleemis led a delegation of the CBCI, which met Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday to express their “pain and anguish and seek justice”. Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam and Rajya Sabha Vice-Chairman P J Kurien were present at the meeting. Cleemis said Singh’s “spontaneous response” was positive and he assured immediate action. “He said he will see to it that justice is done. I hope he will do his best.”

He said neither he nor the community in Satna could understand the reason behind the attack. “There is no evidence or visible reason … It was a pre-planned attack. The conversion allegation in Satna is baseless. The diocese does not get into conversion at all.”

He also rejected the argument that reports of attacks on churches come up only during elections. “That argument is absurd and baseless. Now what’s the connection between election and the attack in Satna? There are reports that in Rajasthan too, Christian groups were attacked. There is no election now,” the Cardinal said.

He wanted the government to “decide serious measures to safeguard the interest of citizens. “Make sure that innocent people are treated properly and given protection. The culprits should be punished for their bad acts and for damaging the image of the country. We should stay together, united in diversity,” he said, adding that the Christian community and its leadership are “committed to work towards the growth of the country beyond ethnic, religious and linguistic affiliations.”

    duction and profit :

    1. Salaries have to be paid. Government aided salaries are almost zero. No new sanctioned posts.
    2. Maintenance of schools need money.
    3. Minority or majority - all are realistic in their finances.

Only profit making institutions are medical schools. If not why would they build them ? Giving doctors to the society ( altruism)?
If you think that minorities are running their Institutions with Government aid , was it in the past or in the present? At present what is extent of aid - figures( number wise) ?

Now majority appeasement is the biggest trump card in an election. BTW where was Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) when Karnataka celebrated 'tippu jayanthi' .The biggest mass murderer of the Christian Community????? And surprising many catholics supported it for political benefits. So now there is no use crying or protesting . Also note, Congi is no longer pro-minority or pro-catholic. Its tilting towards Hidutva for its survival. The recent avtaar or RG in Gujarat is a big example for this dramatic change. In fact in Ktaka too its goin to woo the majority community voters and temple visits are a priority in RGs campaigning agenda. Supporting Christians is not going to benifit the Cong any more, The Christian vote is irrelevant. So do not expect any support either from ruling or opposition.

Christians have contributed a lot to Soceity. They are Harmonious with Hindus and no issue. Religious leaders must sit with Prime Minister and chief Minister and sort the Issue. The Problem is theres are impression given Christians are with Congress and often we see Christian leaders roaming with congress leaders which must stop. Christians are getting attacked by communal elements which is very wrong and protection to be given to Christians. Religious Leaders must show They have no party and their job is to see we Christians are safe immaterial who rule and they must develop good relation with PM and all CMS If Salman Khan can meet PM and develop a good relationship why Christians cannot develop a good relation with PM and get benefit and special protection?. Morever During Congress rule also Christians were Attacked brutally attacked and no one from congress helped Christians . Sonia/Rajeev all have done nothing for Christans except enjoying votes . Currently theres a fearlike situation in country and justice is given depending on if you belong to BJP or Conrgess. Religious leaders Have a great responsibility in restoring peace .

Christians are just 2% in India. But Christians run lot of educational and charity hospitals which are top class. Something like 20 % of the India is getting educated in schools and colleges run by Christians institutions. You will find at least a small school wherever there is a church with at least 100 Christian families and that school gives education to everybody including Christians, Hindus and Muslims , Sikhs etc.
But still some organizations hate Christians just for political gains . If the conversion was the motivation to setup schools and colleges then by this time 50 % Indians would have been Christians. But that has not happened. Because Church and christian schools are not involved in conversion. I feel very sad the way the BJP and associate organizations are trying to divide just for the sake of votes. The seeds of hatred will do only harm. Look at Pakistan they used terrorism as a tool against India and now that same terrorism is biting them back. The same thing will happen in India. Hatred is not good . Today a organization hates some other religion. They will see the taste of power and goondagiri and after sometime they will use it everywhere including on people of their own religion.

These people stand on public beaches and shout about their religion , disturbing others also do this in the bus etc, and he says losing faith in Govt. Govt should ban all conversions. The state Govt is only taking precautionary measure.

    HA Dsoza,
Extending A hand to help is valued more than joining two hands to pray. It is reported that during Nepal earthquake people were suffering but missionaries were busy in distributing bible !!. This kind of emotional intelligent and taking the opportunity to spread the religion is highly unacceptable. India is home for many religion and people must understand humanity comes first than religion. This applies to all including Hindus.

    @Charan Amin
Your knowledge about missionaries is quite pathetic. It is really despicable that in one sentence you have painted the whole missionary community black by quoting some isolated, unverified or may be even anti Christian propaganda driven information. Do some research. Most of the Hospitals, educational institutes, Orphanages, Old age homes etc. that you see in India and around the world is the result of some very dedicated and tireless work of the missionaries. Theirs is a thankless job but they don't mind because for them it is their mission - serving God by serving Humanity with love. Perhaps you have not even heard of the name late Mother Teresa now elevated to the status of Saint by the Church. I usually do not get personal in my comments but your blanket comment against missionaries is highly provocative.

If possible come out of your limited little world of Mangaluru/Bengaluru and and visit some European countries and see for yourself how well they treat immigrants including thousands of Indians.. Only then you might come out of your ignorance and learn to live respectfully with your fellow citizens.. You of shallow mind!!
