Mangalore: Dr Derek Lobo Nominated to UN Expert Group

Mangalore, Jul 16: The regional director, United Nations (UN) World Health Organization (WHO) South East Asia region, has nominated Dr Derek Lobo as a member of the South-East Regional Programme Review Group (RPRG) for elimination of filariasis. The nomination is for a 3-year term.
RPRG is a 9-member group of international experts tasked with reviewing and monitoring the progress of the Filaria Elimination programme in 9 countries of South East Asia. Dr Lobo is one among 3 members from India, the other two being Dr G P S Dhillon, director, National Vector-Borne Disease Control Programme, New Delhi and Dr V Kumaraswami, acting director, Tuberculosis Research Centre, Chennai.
Dr Derek Lobo retired from WHO in April 2007 after a distinguished career. At the time of retirement, he was the Regional Advisor for Leprosy and other diseases targeted for elimination. He is currently based in Mangalore and serves as a consultant at department of community medicine, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore.
