Udupi: Freedom Fighter Shambhu Shetty Gets Invitation to President's Tea Party

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jul 31: After a prolonged wait, freedom fighter Mulki Bappanaduguthu Shambhu Shetty has received the invitation to take part in a tea party being hosted by the President of India at New Delhi, for the freedom fighters on Wednesday, August 9. Shetty's dream of making it to the party was given wide coverage by the media including Daijiworld, in the previous years and also since the last several days.

Shambhu Shetty (90) resides in the town now. The district administration used to recommend his name for this prestigious honour every year for the last five years. Even though he had received the invitation once before, he could not make it because of ill health. Only five persons from Karnataka are eligible to be included in this list of distinguished personalities who are selected to take part in the party.

MLA Raghupati Bhat, through a letter addressed to the chief minister, had sighted Shetty's advanced age and deteriorating health as an impediment in undertaking train travel to the country's capital and had urged him to allow him to travel by air at government cost. Legislators Lalaji Mendon and Abhaychandra, ex Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Harikrishna Punaroor etc., too had taken up his cause with the chief minister.

However, the invitation clearly says that the union government will bear his travel expenses only if he takes up train travel. Raghupati Bhat, who is keen to ensure that Shambhu Shetty does not miss the opportunity of taking part in the tea party, has bought air tickets for Shambhu Shetty and his wife. The couple will be leaving from Mangalore on August 6.

Shetty, one of the few surviving freedom fighters from the state, has brought honour for the twin districts by getting this invitation, being given annually to a select few from the country. He is happy that his long cherished dream is fulfilled and we are happy that we could contribute to some extent, to make this happen.
