Udupi, Feb 1: Speaking after inaugurating a campaign launched to spread awareness about the need to wear good quality helmet after inaugurating it, senior civil judge, Lata, warned that two-wheeler riders who do not wear helmets will not be eligible to claim insurance.

"Many a time we see that knowledgeable people too move around in two-wheelers without wearing helmets as they are afraid that their looks will get otherwise compromised. Every year, 900 persons on an average are killed in our country because of failing to protect their skulls. You have to wear helmets not because of fear of police, but to protect your own lives. You should keep in mind that insurance claims can be rejected for not wearing helmets at the time of the accidents," she explained.

Neurosurgeon, Dr A Raja, who participated in the programme as resource person, explained in detail the affects of injuries and impacts suffered to the head. He too stressed that wearing of helmets is highly advisable.

Additional superintendent of police, Kumarchandra, advised people to wear helmets, duly supporting his advice with the help of statistics relating to accidents in the country.

MGM College principal, Dr Sandhya Nambiar, president of Bar Association, H Ratnakar Shetty, Manipal Auto Club president, Nishant B Bhat, and president of Human Rights and grievances organization, Sultan Iqbal, took part in the meeting programme.

The jatha taken out on the occasion was flagged off by district and sessions judge, Venkatesh Naik. District superintendent of police, Laxman Nimbargi, was present.
