Bonanza for Bengaluru suburban commuters in Budget

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today announced a corpus of Rs 17,000 crore for the local rail network in Bengaluru. The decession came a day after the state cabinet approved the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Projects' first phase to be implemented in the next three years.

The project is a joint venture between the state government and the Indian Railways, and the state government would bear 20 per cent of Rs 349 crore of the total cost.

"A suburban network of approximately 160 km at an estimated cost of Rs 17,000 crore is being planned to cater to the growth of the Bengaluru metropolitan," Jaitley said, while presenting the Union Budget 2018-19.

Railway officials said that in the Bengaluru network, as of now, there will be a total of 58 trains offering 116 services. Each train will have a capacity to carry 1,800 to 2,000 passengers per trip.

Beside Bengaluru he also announced the expansion of the Mumbai suburban train network, spread over 465 km, at a cost of Rs 11,000 crore and said the government also planned to allocate Rs 40,000 crore for the city's rail network.

"The Mumbai transport system, which is the lifeline of the country, will be expanded and augmented to add 90 km of double line track at the cost of Rs 11,000 crore.

"An additional 150 km of suburban network is also being planned at a cost of Rs 40,000 crore, including elevated corridors at some sections," Jaitley said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted "Celebrate Mumbai!" moments after the announcement was made.

The suburban railway in Mumbai operates 2,342 local train services and carries more than 7.5 million commuters daily and this is the first time that the network is being expanded.

Good for allocation provided they implement what they promised without an assurance for the sake of forthcoming assembly election

Hope this does not become one more cause for nightmare to road traffic.
In case of Metro projects both in Bangalore and In Mumbai, existing traffic was disturbed for years together during construction time. In fact Mumbai has taken over 10 years for a short length of 10 kms of Metro project. World record perhaps!!
It is ridiculous idea to reduce the existing road width and cause traffic congestion and show to people that Metro has come in. Le the authorities plan to construct it in open land or through tube trains or acquire land from unauthorised private buildings etc. Let it not be in middle of existing road.
