Udupi: 'Chennemane' Competition Adds Charm to Celebration of Tulu Culture

Udupi, Aug 10: The month of 'aati' (ashada) has a special place in Tulu Nadu culture. A programme was conducted to showcase the cultural importance of this month in the region. Held at Ammanni Ramanna Shetty auditorium on Saturday, August 9, the event was organized by Badagettu credit co-operative society, Ekata institution, and Chetana Navodaya self-help group.
Called 'aatidonji aacharane.’, a 'chennemane’ (traditional indoor game) competition was part of it in which 40 people participated. Well-known litterateur Katyayini Kunjibettu, inaugurated the competition and expressed the concern that the game was becoming a distant memory to the younger generation.
Shanta V Acharya, former member, city municipality, inaugurated the programme. Jayakar Shetty Indrali of Badagabettu credit co-operative society, presided over the function.
Sheela K Shetty, Dr Bhaskarchandra Kumar, Eshwar Shetty Chitpady, Malati Amin, Dr Niketana, and Kudi Vasantkumar, were also present on the occasion. Twenty-two traditional delicacies were served on the occasion and equipments used in Tulu Nadu over the ages, were also on display.
