Uppinangady, Aug 14: The mini hydel power project was supposed to start its operation within 15 days in Neerakatte near Uppinangady. But a flood has destroyed the entire power plant leaving six people dead on Wednesday, August 13.

Three of the bodies have been recovered from the flooded river. They have been identified as Venu, Dereswami, and Penchayda. All three are said to have hailed from Andhra Pradesh.

The project owned by Sagar Power Corporation began operations four years ago with an investment of Rs 100 crore. A total of seven labourers were putting the finishing touches to the power plant.

When two of the labourers came to know that the Netravati river was overflowing, they went to open the gate walls of the dam. But the heavy force of the water broke the gate wall. Venkateswaralu of Andhra Pradesh, had a lucky escape but his companion drowned.

Sorry to hear about the tragedy and the death of those poor people. Plant operation is not even started and the walls collapses. Total disaster. Company is liable to pay the compensation for those who died in this accident.

My condolences to the families of all those poor and innocent people who died in this disaster. However I am totally unconvinced how a power plant which was going to be inaugurated met its fate. Why did the wall collapse. Is someone going to answer all this. Was there shoddy construction. Is there any accountability or enquiry here. Will the owners be tried for corporate manslaughter?or is it all going to be brushed under the carpet like all other tragedies?
